Question about HCP, Grint, Etc.

So I 'restarted' my Grint subscription after pausing it for 3 months (I live in STL, dont play much in winter and if I do rounds dont count towards HCP anyways so whats the point of paying for the premium subscription even though it isnt a lot).  After restarting it on March 1, it doesnt have my cap anymore, just gives a range.

 

I emailed them and they said I needed to sign up for a new GHIN number ($45) then upload that number to the Grint app to start tracking my cap again.

 

So here is my questions:

 

1. I dont really need a cap, i keep it because it was cheap through the Grint and its fun to see if i'm improving or getting worse.  If I pay this $45 thing, I dont HAVE to keep my handicap through the grint right?  I can upload it to another site and dont have to pay for the Grint IN ADDITION to the $45 fee?  Really at the end of the day I'm just getting sick of being nickled and dimed esp for something i really dont need.

 

2. If I do get the $45 GHIN number, can I track my handicap through the Grint on the 'free version' of the app?

 

3. What am i losing by going from paid version of Grint to free?  I like to see the stats but honestly not married to them, its cool to see but I'm a 10 hcp, one round I might have 30 putts and one 40, just the nature of life, there are no 'trends' so to speak so the 'stat history' doesnt do much for me.

 

4.  Any other free apps that keep track of stats such as driving accuracy, GIR, etc?  GPS is nice but I have a Garmin watch and most courses I play are ones I've played a million times so I dont need the GPS to map out a hole for me.

1) Correct. I do not have Grint pro, though I do upload via Grint. Submitting on Grint triggers a submission on my GHIN #, which is pretty nice.

2) Yes, though I find that my handicap in Grint and GHIN are not equivalent. Not sure why.

3) The biggest thing I have noticed is inability to see friends' scorecards. Otherwise, I know stats are more limited.

4) Lots of other posts on various apps. With that said, they are all basically the same until you get into ball/club tracking with Arccos or ShotScope.

Thanks so I guess theoretically if I pay the $45 for the GHIN, cancel my Grint subscrip. at $4 a month, I will come out a few dollars behind but nothing crazy.  

 

Anyone use Diablo Golf App for handicap?  How is it?  I keep seeing it on top apps for 2022 that keep your handicap.

Golfing Analytics is good. Its not free, but fairly cheap at $10/yr. Doesn't have a GPS, but has lots of great stats, which is its main focus. Way better stats than the Grint. Also keeps your unofficial handicap. You have to do a little data entry (takes about 3 or 4 min) for each course to support the handicap, but once you enter it once, you don't have to do it again. If you play lots of different courses, that might be too much of a PITA, but if you play only a handful of courses like most people, its no big deal.

Another option:

 

Im near STL myself and paid $35 to join the Metropolitan Golf Association’s eGolf club. This gets you a GHIN number and you then you can use the free version of the Grint. It will auto load your rounds from the grint into ghin and keep your handicap up to date and compliant.

Now that thegrint doesnt give you a WHS# anymore and we'll all have to either pay to join local clubs or GHIN directly, the premium features are solely for stat tracking. Currently researching which local club has the best deal, one is $60 and includes a round of golf, which is probably what I'll do for 2023.
