First Time Organizing Event, Advice Please

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to put together my first golf event/tournament based on a post I saw on here awhile back and would love some feedback/advice.

"First Tee Open"

- 2 man scramble event

- Each team has a $100 budget ($50/person) to buy a set of golf clubs to use for the event. Each team member has up to $50 to spend on their own set or they can combine and spend up to $100 on a set to share for the event

- These golf clubs will be donated to the first tee program after the event

- $80 entry includes $60 greens fees and $20 towards the prize pool

My thought process is this is a fun way to kind of level the playing field and make everyone a little uncomfortable with their clubs while also being a fun way to give to the First Tee program. I'd love to get your suggestions and feedback as this will be my first time doing it. I'm hoping to get around 5 foursomes for this year and then do it yearly and hopefully keep growing the group.

But honestly who cares if they go over budget if the clubs are being donated anyway. Don't you kind of want them to give the best equipment possible?

I guess my idea was to keep it "fair" for the people playing in the tournament

Yeah totally get that. I understand not setting a super high budget because people might feel compelled to over spend to keep up. And if there are prizes, then you do want to be fair. But its just a funny setup in that your purposefully limiting the quality of your donations.

@player922000 Whats they policy on donating your own older clubs that would have originally cost more than 100 but are technically free now because you already had them?

the reason for the budget is to make it cheap enough to get people interested. In my friend group at least, there isn’t anyone who would shell out $150 for a set just to donate haha plus yeah the idea is to even the playing field a bit with not great clubs. I feel like between 2 people you could get a decent starter set used for $100 though and then it would also make a great donation set. If you have old clubs you want to

use them donate by all means that’s fine. By setting the limit at $50 each I’m trying to make the whole thing sound affordable, trying being the operative word lol

Nice. Interesting concept for sure. I know for a fact that a true player is fine with clubs from goodwill but I feel like I would honestly shoot 10 shots worse. I've played a few rounds with rental clubs that were even decent quality and just struggled mightily with contact. I'd give it a go though. Where is this tournament at?

Yeah, all of my buddies are like 10-16 handicaps so it should definitely make things interesting haha It'll be somewhere in Maryland most likely.
