Matching woods

I've never bought a matching set of heads/shafts at the same time. Almost always end up buying clubs one by one. But... I have bought a club and liked the shaft in particular so much that I get other clubs with the same one. Case in point is my current bag. Got the G425 Fairway with a Rogue White last year and had tons of success with it. Got fit this winter for a new driver and ended up in a Stealth Plus/Ventus Blue. Whatever worked indoors during the fitting didn't translate to the course and after struggling for a handful of rounds I gave up on it. Kept smoking my 5 wood though, and decided "why not" and ordered a G425 Driver with the Rogue White as well, without having ever tried that combo out. Turned out to be a great decision, and I'm hitting the new driver as well as I've ever hit one, especially from a consistency perspective. I think sometimes knowing what does/doesn't work on the course is highly relevant, and going with a similar shaft that you know works in one club across others is often a safer bet than getting fit for something new.

Older thread but was curious about this , I think matching woods help with yardage gapping . I may be wrong but mixing woods and shafts you may get varying launch and spin causing some yardage issues .

I think about the game as four different games, each with different requirements - long end of the bag, long irons, scoring irons, and short game - and like consistent clubs/shafts in each group.

D/3/5/H: TSR (different shafts in D, 3-5, H) - Almost entirely focused on distance, just want consistent trajectory with tolerable spin numbers.

4i - 6i: JPX 923 Forged, SF shafts - Also mostly distance, with some workability needed but also some forgiveness, may be going for the green, but don't think of stopping it (usually shooting to roll it up).

7i - PW: 245,950 GH Neo - Going for the green, distance less important than precision, want to be able to control backspin.

Wedges: Miura Tour QPQ, KBS Hi Rev 2.0 - Completely about control and versatility, often hitting partial swings.

Not recommending this "4 game" approach to anyone else. It just kinda gelled over the years as something that works for me. But I have friends that are really good golfers that (on one side of the line) play quite odd multi-brand/shaft assortments, who's bags look like they came from various garage sales (albeit, really expensive garage sales). And on the other end of the line, friends that are so single-brand that you'd think they had some sort of OEM sponsorship contract. I have a good buddy - single-cap golfer - who's entire bag, from driver to putter, is TaylorMade. (Then again, he has a bit of OCD, so it fits his sense of order.)

So much of golf is psychological.
