Help with bottom end of my bag

Hello all,

 

I recently got fitted for TM Stealth irons and because of my speed, size and AOA, I was fitted with S300 shafts 0.75" longer than standard the fitter suggested I get the 54deg sand wedge due to the sole and bounce. This has essentially become an iron to me, I hit only full shots only and it carries 113-114 and stops within 1yard every time which is fantastic

 

However, I don't feel comfortable pitching or using it out of bunkers. My question would be would it be odd to buy another 54/56 degree wedge solely for these purposes and whether I should go for the same heavy shafts too if I'm only playing shorter shots with it 

 

I currently play off 16

What are the full specs (bounce/grind) of the current wedge?

Get a lob wedge that is comfortable for you to chip with and hit bunker shots. Goes without saying it most likely won’t have the same sole and bounce of your 54.

 

Lots of people carry shafts through the wedges. Most who don’t play heavier wedge shafts than iron shafts, so if I were you I’d start with using the same shaft, or just stick with the “wedge flex” shaft that’s stock in virtually everything out there.

 

At +.75” I’d expect you to want a longer lob wedge than standard, but since you’re not looking for it to play like an iron (as your other wedge does) then you might find it comfortable to wind up somewhere in the middle length-wise. You could easily have a stock club get an extension put in, at least to start.

You could play a 56* and 60* with normal wedge flex shafts etc...depending on your total number of clubs.
May help fill some gaps as it seems like the 54* is playing like a sort of gap/approach wedge for you.

Not at all.  Most folks use one club for getting out of bunkers, the Sand Wedge.

Like you, I use my Sand Wedge all the time for hitting full swing approach shots.  I get a lot of spin and the ball stays on the green.

But, I can see where you may have issues using the same club for both approach and sand shots.  And it is great that you have identified it.

 

Go ahead, buy another club for your sand wedge.  It will help your game.

If you are otherwise happy with the clubs you have, then yes go get a new wedge. S300 is fairly standard, definitely match the shaft.

These days a lot of players have one wedge with a lot of bounce and another with not so much. The big bounce wedge works well out of fluffy sand and the low bounce wedge is better off tight lies. 

 

Which of your wedges has which bounce is a factor of your local conditions.

Yes, this makes sense. The reason I'm not so comfortable pitching with the set wedge is probably because of the wide sole and 12.5deg bounce - I have been thinning it on tight lies. I play on mostly parkland courses but when I play on links (I live close to Birkdale/West Lancs/Hillside etc) I can't play my normal game. Thanks

58* makes for a great sand wedge. 
I used to be 50 / 56 / 60. 
56 was my bunker club. 
Now with 50/54/58, the 58 is my preferred bunker club. 
It also has a bigger rounder sole than my old 56 so I have to keep the face squarer. It’s an adjustment for sure.
