Micheal Jordan Wilson 8802

I just bought my first set of clubs and in the set was a brand new Micheal Jordan 8802 putter. After doing so research online it appears to be a limited edition club. It has 923/2300 engraved in it also. Being someone who is brand new at golfing I’m trying to figure out if this is a club I should use or if it’s worth more as a collectors item. It even still has the cover and tag still on it. I’d post a picture but I’m assuming since I’m new I can’t. Any info would be great though

Go on the 'bay and look at finished auctions to get an idea of value. They're hard to find new, and not the easiest putter to use. If you're a new golfer, lots of better options to make the game easier and more fun. But it's the style of putter I use.

Driver #1: Callaway Epic Max LS, 9°

Driver #2: Adams Speedline F11, 9.5°

Fairway: Callaway Rogue ST Max LS, 18°

Utility Iron: Titleist 718 AP3, 19°

Irons: Titleist 718 AP1, 5-GW, 24°-48°
UW: Titleist Vokey SM8, 52°F

LW: Titleist Vokey SM8, 60°D
Putter: Cameron Studio Style Newport 2.5, 33"
Ball: Bridgestone Tour B RX

People are selling them for up to $1000 brand new in the box on eBay. This one doesn’t look used at all. The old man who sold it to me just put it in the set and said “that’s a pretty nice putter those Wilson’s are good putters” I kind of like that it’s a little heavier I remember playing with my grandfather as a child (I mostly just swung the clubs and hoped I hit the ball ha) and always preferred ones similar to this one over the lighter ones then also. I just kind of don’t want to use it if it’s worth more in someone’s collection you know. I’d hate to use something and ruin it if it had collectors value.

They're selling them ... is anyone buying them for that?

Also, 8802s are usually much lighter than today's putters. Something like 315 g headweight compared to 350 g.

The highest sold one was $650 dollars apparently they retailed for $500 brand new because they were a limited edition item.

yea see I haven’t had a club in my hand since I was like 10 in the 90s and I remember my grandfathers old putters were more thin and light weight. What makes this style of putter harder to use?

Forgiveness ... the "sweetspot" is very small. If you miss it, the ball doesn't go nearly as far. New technology as shown MOI (moment of inertia) can let us hackers hit the ball out towards the heel and toe and the ball will go the same distance. That's why you see more big mallets and heavier putters. It's the next step in the trend started by Karsten Solheim and his revolutionary Ping Anser putter back in the 1960s.

That makes a lot of sense. See I’m a bit of a stubborn learner and prefer to learn with something hard than something easy. I’ve been playing piano since I was in 5th grade and can’t learn if it’s too easy. I’m just always like that ha the challenge is fun. I just don’t want to use it and ruin its value if it’s some kind of collector item. Like taking an old toy out of the box

Looks to be in fairly good condition

for how cheaply you can get second hand newer putters id probably pick up a cheapy gamer until you can figure out if it’s worth something or not

Yea I think I can borrow one of my in-laws old putters for now I saw a post in the past and someone names forged4ever seemed to be pretty knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the 8802 and hopefully he may have some info

Hi - did you ever end up selling the putter?

Hey, haven’t been on in a while. I actually did end up selling it. I got like $350 for it. Well I actually traded it for a Scotty phantom x that wasn’t my thing and sold it for $350

I have one of these still new.  Mine is #2000 of 2300.  I bought it at one of MJ's ranges when I still lived in Chicago full time (20+ years ago).
Jordan had a few golf ranges with hitting bays and they usually had very large, putting greens that had a lot hills / breaks.  There was one out in Naperville where I lived and I would go there quite a bit.  They were selling these Wilson 8802 putters so I grabbed one before I moved away.  Cool little putters but not really worth that much.  I bought it mainly because I was a fan of MJ.  I got into a putting contest with him once at Seven Bridges GC when I was there working one of his charity events.  The bets started getting a little too rich for my blood but I won some $$$ that day before I backed out. 🙂
