Scotty Cameron Flare Shaft Angst

I promised myself I wouldn't get burned again. Alas, here I am - thanks Scotty. 

 

I vowed to not to get tangled up in Scottys web of treachery, but I decided to purchase a Phantom 5.5 from the new line. I had recently had a fit of a different brand putter, so knew what I was looking for in terms of fit and being a taller gentleman - no off the shelf putter would be of use. I decided to buy this in the 35" length with the desire to replace the shaft to suit a 36.5" length. 

 

This was a great idea, up until I realised that it's not easy task finding a replacement. 

 

I now come to you good people for advice. The flare tip shaft is a 0.400" outside diameter with an inside diameter of 0.355". The spud is 0.352" and has an insertion length of 0.800". Is sending this to Scottys custom shop to reshaft this the only option (I don't really fancy plugging it), or is there anywhere I can buy something that would help me on my way.

Right, so I just found this out. It's an "Over the Hosel" tip as you correctly pointed out! The giveaway for this of course being it's consistent diameter throughout the bottom sections before tapering up. Any ideas where you can get a over the hosel shaft as above?

Welcome to the Phantom line and .390 shafts. So you have a few options:

 

• Blow the grip off and extend the stock shaft 1.5", regrip, and be on your way. 
• Buy a BGT Stabilty shaft with .390 tip.
• Buy a .370 steel iron shaft of your choice, measure up to where you get aroun .400" OD, cut and measure ID, then keep trimming up slightly until you get the desired fit.
• Turn the spud down to accept .370 shafts.

I believe these are much like other SC over the hosel shafts in that they're proprietary from Nippon. As noted above there are not a ton of simple options out there. IMO your cheapest and quickest option is to putt an extension in the butt of the shaft.

Bgt shafts at 0.390" have a 0.355" id?

They have .355, .370, and .390

 

I could be mistaken, but thought the phantom line went to .390 for their slant neck putters.

Yes they do, but seeing as the 0.390 would match up with what's there, it would still have to marry up to the spud

I would just add 1 1/2 shaft extension to the grip end and move on.

I'm so confused here. If you were to buy a new shaft with a .390 tip, it is a direct replacement. Dry fit, measure, butt trim to length, glue it up, and regrip. I'm still not sure why blowing off the grip and adding an extension is out of the question.

It's not that it's out of the question to extend it, it's more just curiosity at this point. Started footering around with club building and just wanted to know if there were other solutions besides extending. 

 

In terms of the bgt idea, would the 0.390" have the correct inside bore to fit over the male part at the top of the hosel was what I was meaning.

There's plenty of other options aside from an extension. I listed them in my post above. If you go with BGT, order the .390 tip as it is the one you're after. It will definitely fit over the spud on your slant neck. As far as putter shafts go, .390 OD will have an ID of roughly .350 and .370 will have an ID of roughly .330.

You can buy .395 shafts on ebay if you don't want an extension.

Ok, I just wanna chime in on this: Would any KBS CT Tour Putter shaft fit? Asking 'cause I'm waiting for 9.5 head and would like to either use the black or brushed version of it.

A CT Tour will not fit without modification. The better question here is; Where are you getting black CT Tour shafts right now?
