There is NO penalty for hitting a ball over an OB area. As long as you clear it. There is a penalty for hitting a moving ball! So it is not even close to the same.

I NEVER brought up the consequences of successfully carrying an OB area. Why are you asking me this question? It was not part of anything that I posted. dave

I believe you did. it is right here in the post you made on the first page of this thread.

To my mind what Phil did in hitting a moving ball intentionally was not outside the rules. It was well described in the rules and there was a penalty involved. It is not any different that needing a eagle on the 18th hole so you go for this insane carry over a dogleg that is almost certain to fail leaving you OB (also a 'violation of the rules'). I just don't see that stuff as 'outside the rules'. It is just an action that carries a penalty. Now recording a 4 on a hole where you took a 6 - that is outside the rules.

Can you read what you just posted where the "almost certain" outcome is leaving a ball OB? How could I POSSIBLY be more clear???

I can read. you stated "almost certain". That is your opinion. Just because IYO it is "almost certain does not mean it will be so. And it does not alter the fact there is NO penalty if the ball does not stay in the OB area.

OK fine. If you want to make up crap because you cannot be absolutely certain that it didn't happen... You try to carry over the trees/dogleg/OB but can't see the outcome. The ball ends in bounds, but a dog runs into the fairway and picks up the ball and carries it into a yard alongside the fairway - in the area where a ball that failed to carry the dogleg might end up. And you see and identify this ball as yours. No one sees the dog move the ball (or even sees the dog). You arrive and find the ball in the yard and identify it as yours. By rule this ball is OB even though it stopped in bounds.

ps. Yes, and if another outside influence then moves the ball again back in bounds (unseen) then it is in bounds. And if only the second outside influence that moves the ball back in bounds is seen by you then it is still OB. And so on (and I am done here and I actually had a point to make that you flew right over because you chose to do that).
