My Torched Finish is...

I don't know what it's doing but just curious what's happening here, I assume surface oxidation from the torching? Head is 303 BTW no carbon. 

 

 

If this was anywhere else I wouldn't mind but I do see it at address, it's not a huge deal but I like a clean look at address, if the whole sole looks like it I wouldn't be asking. 

 

I assume I'd need to strip the torched finish to remove this? I wouldn't mind this in satin or a bead blast vs torching again.

This happened to one of my putters previously. It was Torched SS and it started forming these little marks all over it. The marks on mine were almost exclusively where the magnets on the headcover brushed over it. 

 

I'm not an expert with metals so I'm not sure what it is. For what it's worth, the putter maker at the time couldn't exactly explain it either.

Well I just rubbed the cover magnet all over the sole so lets see if this happens there, I have a better thought it could be from some fertilizer or similar from a course I played. Will see what happens but if I have to strip the torching if it really annoys me I will.

First, have you tried washing with dawn and warm water?  SS will sometimes look dull and get spots that will wash off.

 

Second, in my experience this is caused by not prepping really good before torching which means you had to pour the heat to it for a longer period of time to get it to change color which results in the carbon particles coming to the top which looks like rust spots, "SS does have a certain amount of carbon".  I've had this with going to blue "which is really high long heat" but not bronze, which still seems to be poor prep.

Bar Keepers Friend will get it back to pre torching, I think it's due to prep as well.

@oneaugusta tried the Dawn soap and it kinda worked. It's not visible from address but up close still there which is fine with me for now. 

 

@HandsomeMatt if this keeps coming back I'll do that to strip the torch to bring it back to satin. Luckily I can remove the neck from the head so can get it all easily.

If I had a putter that looked this good, and all I had to do is use Dawn and wipe it down after every round ...
I would gladly do it. Now I'm craving a milk chocolate candy bar.
