I used to play of 6! Believe it or not ! never really had a pretty swing ! (Very jim furyk when off 6)Had numerous lessons Lately but can't get things to stick, really frustrated with my swing, am I right in thinking overswing ? firstly in downswing I think I fail to get weight transfer foward ? and literally throw hands through, with little compression and very high weak distance.

I'd agree with the overswinging and weight shift issues, yes, and they are connected. Lets work backwards from your impact position:



We see the normal weak early extended impact position where you've lost spine angle, hip depth, and haven't cleared your lower body. This will be caused by two main factors; back swing/swing length issues and an overall lack of knowing what you should be doing with your lower body.



This would be considered a pretty standard length backswing that wouldn't get you into trouble. Your hands are a little flat/deep, meaning they are quite far behind you, but plenty of pros play from similar positions so it isn't a problem in a vacuum. It appears however that you're rolling pretty aggressively to the outside of your right foot though, and that combined with how much your left knee comes towards the camera here i'd bet that you're shifting your weight too far back and getting stuck back there a bit. A face on view would be needed to quantify this any further though.



This is where the main issues are. Everything here is excessive, this is all fat that needs to be trimmed. All you're doing here is moving from a position that you could deliver the club fairly easily from to one that you can't. The overrunning of the arms, lifting and disconnecting of the right arm/elbow, and the shift from the club being on plane to across the line and over-swung are all issues. And yes there are some pros that even recover from this type of position as well, but that is a product of deeply ingrained movement patterns, either from childhood or from certain physical factors, and if you can't execute the sorts of moves to recover from these types of positions in an innate or intuitive way then they should be considered a problem to be fixed rather than a quirk to work around. What I mean by that is:



Regardless of where you end up in the backswing, the goal is always to get the club on plane quickly in the downswing (the plane being the one you establish at address with the angle of the club shaft). We see Daly here in a very similar position as you at the top, but notice how quickly he gets the shaft back on plane whereas you're pulling over the top and steep. With the shaft on plane Daly is free to rotate through impact correctly because the club is already orientated how it needs to be to make solid contact, whereas your club is oriented steep and will head directly into the ground behind the ball if you don't save it with the hands while stalling your lower body rotation to create time for this.

The initial low hanging fruit to work on is your backswing length and your lower body weight shift. For the former you are very likely going to contend with a "proper" length swing feeling very short and this is where you'll have to do some brain recalibration. Right now you're swinging around 150% with the goal of getting you back to 85-90% roughly speaking, like the position I showed in the second gif. You WILL fail at this initially if this long overrunning swing is ingrained at all, so give it time. It will feel weird and wrong, but it should because its different. I recommend starting slow and rehearsing in front of a mirror to gain the visuals and body awareness you'll need to know when you've hit the right spots. With that you'll want to stay more centered with the lower body and not get so far on the outside of your trail foot. It doesn't take much to "fully" shift back so don't feel like you need to fling yourself all the way back to make a full shift. There is a lot more to go into beyond all that but I don't want to overwhelm (more than I already have lol) so give those ideas a try and take some more videos if you can. 👍

Thank you very much for taking the time to comment, annotate and break it down for me, I will read and scrutinise it further. I was watching a very nice video by jchowngolf on YouTube named instantly fix your overswing it seems like a good start as you pointed out. I have always heard during all my lessons, I have a lot going on, too many moving parts ! Once I’ve ironed out those years of ingrained rubbish, It might take a while lol I’ll get a front on view soon just to confirm your thoughts thanks again Fraser Berkshire, U.K
