Random Vintage Pickups

Well since the X-31 irons I picked up last week, I’ve snagged a few more items. Below is a leather bag I got for $25. Wilson to match the irons. I have a set of Wilson Persimmons 4300 to match on the way for and will post here when they arrive. I picked up a set of Spaulding 3-PW Executive irons with decent condition grips (no tears?) for $30. Then I decided to get a set of Titleist DCI’s (what I learned on) for nostalgias sake and I’m thinking about building out a 90s/00s bag. Got a set of DCI black oversized heading my way this week. This vintage pickup game is fun and pretty cheap considering! Always have bought used clubs (see my what’s in the bag thread) but this is oddly satisfying. Finally, I picked up a Maltby club guide (up to 88’). I wanted the version 4 but nothing is less than $150, and that’s crazy…

 

I’ve regripped clubs before so if any of these wind up being fun to keep, would regripping hurt their value?

First - Maltby ID Guide.  Personal opinion is ‘88 is good enough. I really don’t see me getting anything much past ‘85.  The Exec irons?  There’s literally tons of them out there.  Regrip them if you want.  If they’re dry and cracked?  Do them NOW.  I lost an iron trying to play old grips.

 

You’re gonna love that leather bag. Lots of big pockets. That was my first vintage bag purchase too.

I put a 975J driver in the bag with my DCIs along with the matching fairway 3W.

Big difference between Laminated and Persimmons woods. Yours are Laminated.

Thanks! I realized these were laminated but figured that term applied loosely. New to the vintage game

@SnowbirdTom andddd a few hours later I’ve won an auction on a 975J driver. Found a few YouTube videos where other than forgiveness, it seems to test favorably against more modern Titleist drivers. Very curious to try. Have an offer on a 3 wood, going to rest on the 5 wood for now but basically will have a 90s/00’s bag by next weekend too. Now I just need to find a cheap bag to throw this all in

That bag is class.  I have major bag jealousy going on right now, and so do the rawed-out and copper detailed '76 Wilson Staffs in my profile pic.

Regarding your regripping comment and would it impact value if your clubs.  There is really no value to worry about so regrip away.  Game them and enjoy.  These aren’t sought after clubs so nothing to worry about but it may cost you more in grips than the clubs are actually worth.  If you like them and game them then it’s all good.

After a range session today, few thoughts:

 

- Wilson X31 are fun to hit, bit harder for me than my current Callaway XR OS irons, but even hit well, very fun 

-Wilson 4300 1 wood when hit well went about as far as my 3 current wood. When hit bad, well it was real bad.

-Titleist 975 5 wood (haven’t received the driver or 3 wood) hit decent for me. Very playable still!

Finally, the DCI black iron set hit just like I remembered. I’m definitely going to keep these as I wanted a 90s bag (I’m a 90s kid), and they can serve as a second/spare set if needed. Already ordered the sand wedge so I’ll have 4-SW. I’ve decided to put the Spalding Executive set 3-P for sale and hope to at least get what paid for it ($30). All in all, it’s been fun buying and trying older clubs.

Finally assembled my 90s (maybe 00s) bag!

 

-Vintage Burton bag (with rain cover!)

-Titleist 975D and 975J drivers (not sure which I’ll keep)

-Titleist 14.5 & 18.5 975 woods

-Titleist DCI black irons 4-SW

(Ram zebra putter thrown in for fun)
