Golf shaft vertical at top of back swing

Wondering how to get the club into a better position at top of backswing so i’m not having to try and shallow so much on downswing so i don’t come over the top.

You'd have to post still images of the top of your backswing and/or video to say for sure, but IMO the most common cause of the club getting off plane in the way you describe is a breakdown of the wrist conditions described a bit by Eric Cogorno here. The top hand (left hand if you're a righty) cupping and the bottom hand losing extension (backwards bend).

This can be exacerbated by other factors as well as various takeaway issues can encourage your wrists to breakdown like this, but again we'd need to see your swing to say anything for sure.

I agree, we need to see your swing at the top.

 

Ideally, start the clubhead back on the targetline (lay a stick down behind the ball parallel to  your feet) and near the top of the backswing rotate your arms and hands like you are turning a steering wheel to the right. Also, add some more wrist set. If the shaft is vertical, you have no wrist set and probably no power.
