3 Handicap LH Driver DTL - Too Much Shoulder Turn and "Across the Line?"

Recommended Posts

Hello Friends,

My tendency is to take the club back inside, go across the line (due to both the takeaway and a slight cupping of my right wrist) and past parallel at the top, and get stuck on the downswing. I've worked hard to get the head in front of my hands or a little outside them at P2 but am still not satisfied overall.

Swing #1 (February)

I'd say this was 80% effort as I didn't really finish the follow-through. I was able to stop at parallel but my right wrist was a little cupped.

Swing #2 (May)

90% effort here. Right wrist was flat but I still got long and across the line.

My questions are:

  1. If I take the club away on or slightly above plane and not cup my right wrist, what will cause me to go across the line? Am I doing something with my left hand?
  2. Am I actually not going "across the line" and just turning my shoulders too much?

I take lessons but figure additional sets of eyes can't hurt. I just really, really want to stop short of parallel and get the club down the line or laid off.

Any feedback is welcome. Thank you!

You are keeping the club ahead of the hands by pushing the arms away from you and getting disconnected. That’s not really fixing the issue of an inside takeaway. In your 90% shot you get them behind you and you end up with a very flat swing and no hip depth or rotation.

You fall towards the ball in the backswing and then you fire your left hip forward causing you to get stuck.

What is your instructor telling you to do and what drill(s) has your instructor given you.

I can’t imagine the instructor promoting this type of takeaway and backswing

I appreciate your thoughts but am not sure I follow.

"Feeling" the head move outside on the takeaway was intentional. What fixes the issue of an inside takeaway?

Interesting. I've always thought I got too steep on the downswing. We have been working on quieting the lower body though.

This is troubling because I felt completely balanced and didn't feel stuck at all. By forward, do you mean to the ball or to the target?

Exactly what I'm doing in the takeaway in both videos. He also wants me to feel like I'm making a chip backswing with the driver to actually shorten it.

If you have any suggestions or YouTube video recommendations, please let me know. Thanks!

Hand path in while club stays out with proper wrist set

Shaft should be pointed inside the ball line at p3 you are outside of that

Towards the ball

You aren’t making a chip swing in either video with those takeaway moves.

The takeaway should be more shoulder/core involvement and you are using arms to move the club
