Can Someone Educate Me

I've been playing around with the Trackman at our club's range this week.   I usually align square -- knees, hips, shoulders.   It's something I worked on for years with my instructor.   I notice when I align in a very closed position with shoulders and dropping my right foot back, my attack angle on my driver goes from its typically 2-3 degree upward numbers to consistently in the 5-7 degree upward position, with the exact same tee height.  My clubhead speed goes up a couple of mph and my ball speed increases a couple mph.  I'm at a loss as to how to explain this to myself.    It makes sense to me that maybe my club path or swing direction (sorry, I always get those two confused between which one you can see and which one you can't) numbers are more to the right than usual.   Is it that the closed position makes my path wider or longer, or changes the release point to get the extra attack angle, clubhead speed and ball speed?

 

Any ideas on why the closed position would change these numbers are appreciated.   As you can tell, I'm a Trackman novice.

When you’re aimed perfectly square and hit up 2-3* that’s going to be a pull all things being equal.  When you drop the right foot and hit up more now you’re 3D plane is more aligned to the target which allows you to speed up and get better impact conditions.

You're swing possibly becomes more efficient and you probably end up in better positions when you play more of a draw set up with shoulders closed and right foot back.  Your AoA increases which can lead to higher ball speeds but usually comes at the price of inconsistent contact.

Naw, Monte is right. You have to shift the plane in relation to AoA.

 

Imagine a hula hoop with an alignment rod attached in line with the hula hoop. Drop the hula hoop to an inclined plane and imagine hitting down or zero AoA. The rod is facing right. You have to shift plane left to align the rod with target.

 

Rotate hula hoop to more up AoA and the rod is aimed left, so you have to shift the plane right, which is what you’re doing.

FWIW Ben Hogan suggests lining up more closed to target path the longer the club gets. And vice versa for the shorter clubs.
