Wet sand technique

Had a terrible day in the sand traps with wet/compact sand yesterday. I thought I just needed to close down the face and that didn't work. Any fool proof methods for a higher capper to get out of wet/compact sand? Do certain clubs/bounce make a difference? I am using a Callaway CB 56 degree with most shots.

Treat em like hitting a normal chip/pitch. Dont try the normal explosion-type shots.

Take the penalty.  Stroke and distance or 2 shot penalty to drop it out the back of the bunker.

 

One of the hardest shots because you don't know how the wet sand is going to interact with the high bounce club head. As a high handicapper ball first contact  isn't a good option.

I have a low bounce 58/6 just for wet sand and hard clay mud lies to pick it off the ground.  But by no means foolproof.  A great shot with the 58/6 is anywhere on the putting surface.

 

I've been practicing enough to be able to switch between different turf/sand interactions on consecutive shots.

Half swing with a 54*. Trust me on this one. I always use a 60* but when the sand is wet 54*

That wedge has enormous bounce, which is not good in that sand.

 

 I like wet sand, I find it easier.  The club won’t dig much.  Normal sand technique, less swing.

I love hitting out of wet sand, so much easier to get out of. Key is using a low bounce wedge. Depending on how wet/compact the base is I'll either lay the face open or come in steep.

Yes, come in steep.  Dry fluffy sand you can rely on the club head to go though the sand and the bounce takes care of things.   Firm packed sand wet or dry you need to hit down behind the ball and ensure the head doesn’t bounce off the sand and belly the ball.

It’s the same shot.  If it’s not for you , you're normal sand shot is way too steep/ and or fat. Find a wet bunker and practice it.  When you figure that out your whole sand game will get better. I prefer a wet bunker. You can control the ball better. Get some spin.  A fluffy bunker is a one shot only deal. And that’s a fat chunk and run.

I agree.  I typically use a 54* with a fair amount of bounce from "normal" sand.  When it is packed down and/or wet, I go to my 60* with much less bounce and try to pick it with face open or hit it like a flop.

if it's firm, use less speed with a square face.
