2023 Overseed Schedule

Is the Arizona Golf Association not publishing one this year? I feel like normally it is out by now. I am finding zilch on their website.

 

Has anyone seen a comprehensive one besides this one: https://www.arizonagolfvacations.com/news/2023-arizona-golf-overseeding-schedule/ which I think might not be totally accurate?

They must have read my post, lol. Arizona Golf Association just announced via email that they have released their overseed schedule.

This is my first year out here, what exactly is the deal with overseeding? I have family coming in for a visit at the end of October and looking for a round or two but it looks grim.

Bermuda grass goes dormant during the cooler winter months.  Most courses will dry the course out during the end of september and mow (scalp) off the dormant dry bermuda of all the playing surfaces (usually fairways and greens).  Ryegrasses are then seeded and allowed to grow for the winter months.  Courses close from two to for weeks during this grow in period.  Net result: dry fast brown conditions before overseed, and very wet shaggy  green conditions after overseed.  Most people dont enjoy the wet shaggy conditions, including cart path only.  Depending on the date of overseed, (hence the schedule above is important) a course may not be decent until mid december.  The great irony of desert golf is the best month has the worst conditions.  Shaggy greens running 5-7 on the stimp.

It's not as bad as it looks.  In most areas the overseeding is staggered, so there is always golf to play.  Right before overseed you get amazing rollout on fairways, though holding greens can be interesting.  After, things are slow for a while, letting the new rye take hold.  And, it will be cart path only in most cases for a few weeks.  There are some courses (I wish there were more), that don't overseed the fairways.  Dormant Bermuda is fine to play off of, but a lot of people don't like yellow grass!

The overseed process is the cost we pay for having really nice looking and playing courses through the winter.  Just the facts of growing grass!

All will be done with the overseed by the end of October.  Use the posted schedule to find courses that started early.   It will be slim pickings.
