Arm Lock Putter Question

Recommended Posts

I have been wanting to try an arm lock putter for a while now. I used to putt with an Odyssey O Works #7 Red putter and switched to a Scotty Cameron Super Select Newport last summer. I really like the Scotty Cameron's feel and weight and although I don't feel it has improved my putting any, I do prefer it over my Odyssey.

I would like to customize my Scotty Cameron into an arm lock putter, but am not sure what shaft I should purchase, what grip, what length, and what loft/lie adjustments would need to be made. I really do want to do this, but don't want to ruin a perfectly good (and expensive) putter. Today, I purchased and ArmLock AL2 Converter putter grip and shaft extension. Supposedly, this grip is bored in such a way that when the shaft is inserted it accounts for the forward shaft lean at address and presents the putter face square. I am going to purchase a means to trim the shaft to get it square, then play around with length once the extension is glued on to determine where to trim the extension. Then install the grip.

Initially, I thought I would throw this on my Odyssey putter to try it out, then if I like it buy another and install it on the Scotty Cameron. Thoughts? Here is a link to the product I purchased:

  • CBearse changed the title to Arm Lock Putter Question

I'd advise against "converting" a regular putter to an armlock but here's how to anyways.

You'll need to order some weights for that you want that head anywhere from 375-400g+

You'll need to measure the tip size of the shaft to know what shaft size to order.

As for which you'll want something long, heavy and stiff. The possible best cheap option is the Nippon shaft, they have a 160g steel option, it may be short but it could work depending on how long you want the putter to be.

Grip, there are many but it's personal find a 15-21" grip that you like.

Then the hardest part is bending the loft and lie, you'll need to add a lot of both and many shops don't like doing this, it can be done but need to be slow and careful, it may also throw off the sole draft too.

All that said and done you could have a putter you love or absolutely hate so just buy an armlock and try it out instead.

Or ... You could try the grip the OP linked to.

Have you tried armlock before, in a shop or at a practice green? It's not for everybody.

I think you've got the right idea, try it on a back up before switching the gamer.

Not an expert but I believe factory armlock putters typically have a fair bit more loft than normal putters. Something around 5-7*.

Locking the grip to your forward arm is basically exaggerating a normal forward press, so much so that delofting a e.g. 3* could end up with negative loft thereby pinching the ball against the ground - this generally produces a hop right after impact.

The higher loft of the stock armlock putter allows for a more normal loft at impact. I think there may be some head-weight differences as well.

At least that's how I understand it. Dunno1.gif
