Driver bias question

I think it’s about face orientation and CG placement. A Ping SFT driver will sit more closed and have a CG location closer to the heel.

CG placement is the most influential, IMO, followed by face angle.

Sorry if this has been asked else where. I’m curious what characteristics determine a driver bias (more draw or more fade)? What are some good example drivers for each type? Thank you very much

I think “draw biased” typically means COG, rather than face angle, so that the golfer isn’t looking down at something he would then feel like he had to manipulate to hit the ball squarely.  IMO, the shift of COG is a much more subtle change than face angle changes, and perhaps more than hitting a draw, it reduces the likelihood of big two-way misses. The Ping SFT drivers and the Callaway Paradym X would be great examples of this.

I’ve ALWAYS played a draw, and for years now, beginning with the Ping K15 and most recently with the Paradym X, I’ve always gotten the best results, both at fittings and on the course, with draw biased drivers, and I can still hit a fade when I have to.  I can’t explain the why of this, but I’ve accepted it as just part of my game, and the fitters I’ve worked with never seemed bothered by it.

As to “fade biased”, I don’t think that’s a big thing, if only because the great mass of amateur golfers do NOT need help moving the ball in that direction; they’re trying to find ways to get rid of their tendency to slice.  Also, with adjustable hosels, I think drivers in general began to be more square at address, which translates to “fade biased” for too many golfers.  Add adjustable sliding weights and hosel settings, and there you are.

The only drivers I’ve hit at fittings that felt TO ME as if they were fade biased have been the TM Stealth and Stealth2.  But I’d be more than surprised I’d that had anything to do with COG.

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
