Magnetism of steel Anser putters

Picked up an Anser 4 recently which I’m 90% sure is steel, however some comments online suggesting steel putters are slightly or not magnetic. Takes some effort to pull the magnetic Headcover off this one.
 

Any owners of Ansers (particularly the 4) able to see how strong the magnetism is please? I imagine all Ansers 4s have the same steel alloy….

 

Not sure whether it’s been repainted. Keen to paint the correct colour so need to know material.

Post a picture of it. There have been so many versions of every ping putter it would help to know which you own. 

 

Additionally...I think you are trying to determine Carbon Steel vs Stainless steel.  If it is one of the black finishes, likely Stainless steel.

Steel shafts, or any steel tube, will become magnetized after time. Steel pipes stored on the ground have to be demagnetized before welding them.

 

A carbon steel head doesn’t become magnetized. It’s carbon steel if a magnet is attracted to it, not the head.

It's my understanding that the Anser 4's were either stainless steel or BeCu copper.

Colour is suggesting stainless steel plus black infill but it looks a bit like this was not done in the factory.

Some stainless steel contains alloys and impurities that can still have mild magnetism. I've seen it with some Cameron stainless putters. It won't be a strong hold, but there can be some attraction.

 

This looks like stainless to me. If it was anything other a magnet would attract very strongly.

That’s the thing, I’m getting pretty strong attraction with the magnets in the Headcover. They snap onto the head when I’m taking the cover off. I keep hearing mild magnetism for steel, which is making me wonder about BeNi…

Don’t really want to buy a steel Anser just to check, although one is on my eBay watch list…

I'm pretty sure they made these only in stainless and other materials. BECU and BeNi  maybe some others. 

 

I also think that's just a tumble finish and not painted.

Yeah sorry I mean the infill paint. These were definitely in stainless steel, black oxide steel, BeNi and I think I’ve seen a BeCU too. Catch it in the right light and it has the sparkle of a BeNi, but visually looks mostly like steel. It’s the magnetism that’s making me question it.

99% certain that is an SS A4.  I may be wrong but I think the BeNi ones were later in the run (so not pat pend), as well as the gold paintfill.  BeNi definitely has a slightly yellowish hue to the metal too.

 

What I will say is that the black sightline and the tumbled or Guyson finish indicates either that someone sent it to Ping to refinish, or it was an old stock head which for some reason got the later (late 90s/early 2000s) black rather than white sightline. Either way, nice putter.

The magnetic flap on my putter cover will stick to any number of stainless iron heads.

Thanks for those with input. Another thread has confirmed a similar putter is steel, confirmed by Ping direct. I've also just got a black oxide finish steel Anser 4 which is also strongly magnetic, so yes, confirmed as steel.
