I ask the pro at my club what their most sold ball is. It is always pro v or x by 50% over other brands. Also, I find significantly more of them in the woods. That doesn’t say much for the quality of player that plays them but does attest to the Titleist marketing machine that we are all funding. The DTC balls price points have proven that.

I think people play them because that's what the pros play and they think no matter what their HC or ability that it will help them.

I wonder how much of a Titleist ball's revenue is devoted to marketing? I never buy them but if I find one that looks new I'll play it, in fact I'll save it for a "let er rip" elevated tee on a wide fairway. I blame the commercials.

The word for playing clubs that don’t conform to whatever rules are being applied is cheating. If no rules are being used, you don’t have a game.

The USGA’s power is that it is the trade association of the people who own and run golf courses. All owners, even members, may not enforce rules the USGA enacts, but on some level the USGA will tend to enact the rules that the organization believes in its collective best interest. Implicitly by going on property owned by somebody else you agree to do so only for purposes they allow, which is to play golf according to the rules they recognize.

Some things are understood by civilized people…and don’t have to be enforced.
