Wilson Staff putter thoughts

Picked up a Wilson Staff MT22 putter a couple of weeks ago. Love Wilson irons so I thought I would try one of their putters. They check all my typical boxes for a putter, milled stainless steel, light face milling, 350 gram head weight, even came with my preferred grip (Lamkin deep etch) and a magnetic head cover. Went with the MT22 mallet as I liked the design. Got it in 35” to get the 350 gram head weight ( 2x 10 gram weights)  and then replaced the shaft to make 33”.
 

My initial impressions are very positive. Milling on the putter is very good, finish is good, balance is excellent, feel is very good, frames the ball perfectly, is easy to aim and puts a good roll on the ball. Played 18 on a Donald Ross course with fast firm greens with lots of slopes and breaks and was able lag the ball well and made some nice 10 to 20’ putts. Shorter putts were easy with the longer flange line.
 

Minor complaints, lie angle of 71 degrees is too upright, all black paint fill is a little boring, prefer the shape of my Toulon Palm Beach.
 

Will this replace my current gamer, probably not. Is it a nice putter, most definitely.

 

Anyone else tried a Wilson Staff putter? If so, what are your thoughts?

I have this putter in the rotation and I thought you kind of nailed it with your summary. I think the biggest pro(s) in my book is the shape and the soft feel. 

 

My only real con was I think the Wilson in the cavity is pretty boring and kind of looks "cheap" if that makes sense; maybe they should have gone with the shield there IMO. 

 

I also think the price point probably scares some folks away, but if they can be picked up at a discount I would highly recommend it

Love the 8802 from this line. Don't really like the aesthetic of the rest of the line from a branding perspective (particularly the cavity) but they feel nice.

I agree the Wilson in the cavity doesn’t look great. Font on the irons is better or just Staff or the shield would have been better.

It's insane that that putter goes from concept to production and that Ugly old font remains across the entire cavity.  

 

Why doesn't Wilson modernize their symbol a bit?

I have a BL22 I use regularly.  It’s the equal of any Cameron or Bettinardi I’ve used.  I can’t see the font in the cavity when putting so I don’t really care about that.

They are more than competent tools.  If you can putt, then you can sink putts with this.  The rest is preference.

Wilson putters actually look and feel pretty nice, at least the ones I've rolled in a store.   It is just incredibly hard for them to gain any traction with the Scotty/Odyssey/TM marketing juggernauts against them.  Same goes for other solid but less popular brands like Cleveland/Never Compromise or I would say even Mizuno.  Hogan has a few nice models, $199, and it seems like they can't even give them away....

I kinda respect that they will not pay to get on the hot lists and similar things.  If they are making enough money, then why sell out?

 

The best guy that I played with all year (65 without even trying) played Wilson Staff Irons, wedges and putter.

- the D-shape mid mallet style

- it has 71° Lie (and not 70° as most of the other standard putter models)

- the clean style

- the soft feel

- the alignment and the toe hang seem to work for me

 

What I don't like...

- at impact this model produces a high pitched "ting" sound

- additional weights must be ordered as a "spare part" by an official retailer

You may want to check your weights and makes sure they are tight. I don’t get a high pitched ting sound with mine. Sound changes when you miss the sweat spot but no ting for me.

How would you describe the sound of your putter? Is it like a muted "tock"?

It is similar to my 2019 Toulon Palm Beach. I would describe the sound as crisp but not tingy. Feel in the hands is soft.
