OG paradym cracked face

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone, so I have a OG Paradym TD 9* driver and today while playing (on hole 13) I noticed the club sound a little different. I looked at the club and noticed a crack in the face. Runs horizontally and is about an inch or so long.

Callaway to their credit is sending me a new one free of charge. Is this a common issue among this line?

I am about 116-118ss so not putting the club under any excessive speed. I do practice 2 times per week but only get maybe 15-20max rounds in per year.

118ss is only 'not excessive' if you are comparing yourself to LD peeps. Its up there 🙂

I would not call it common based on the cracked thread ratio here, but it does happen on just about any modern thin faced multi-material driver from time to time. Cally and TM are both decent with service if you are original owner.

I thought it was pretty quick but seems like everyone on here is mid to high 120’s. Even seen a couple posts about being 130’s, so compared to them it’s not excessive 😂

Lol -- for a lot of folks, the internet adds about 15% in distance and club head speed.

To your question, yes this occurred with some of the Paradym heads. You are swinging at a decent clip and it doesn't take much to produce a crack if there's a weak spot. Good on Callaway for sending you a new head. The AI Smoke line is very nice so you'll get yourself a good upgrade.

Thanks for the info, I figured guys were saying what their max speed was, not normal/course speed. Didn’t think they would inflate their numbers beyond what they’re actually capable of.

I actually prefer the OG and luckily for me, they had one in stock. I didn’t hit the smoke much, but noticed a touch higher spin (which I could fix with weights I’m sure) and the face felt harder.

The feeling at impact was enough for me to not spend enough time to tell if there was the added forgiveness that they speak about.

Are you playing the new Smoke? If so, how’s the forgiveness?

I'm not playing it but I had a chance to do some testing with it. As with so many of the modern heads, I don't think there's a ton of difference between OG and smoke. I prefer the color scheme on the smoke and seemed to like the sound a bit better. I couldn't get a great idea of spin difference as I was testing a different shaft in the smoke. Didn't notice much change forgiveness wise. If you like the OG, no issues staying in that model.

My original Paradym TD head failed after just under a season of use.  I had purchased the driver new off of Callaway's website.  I called them and detailed the issue I was having and they sent a brand new driver out that week with a return label for the old driver.  I received the new driver before the old driver was even in their possession.  The process was quite quick with very few questions from the service rep, which leads me to believe it was a widespread issue.  I didn't see a visible crack in the face like you, but balls started traveling about 80% of normal on the 13th hole of my round and the head was making a strange noise when swung.  Almost like air was passing through the head.  First time I've ever seen anything like it.   My SS is in the 112-115 range but I do beat balls on the range.  I typically play 2-3 times per week during the peak season.

Happy with Callaway's customer service, but I have since moved on to the AI Smoke TD head.  So far, so good.

So had a chat with customer service again today and apparently the OG TD is no more. Well, they MAY be getting more in 6-8 weeks. I’m heading to FL for some golf next week so that’s an issue. They’re “upgrading” me into the new one as they did for you.

How are you liking the new version compared to the original? Any noticeable difference in launch, spin or forgiveness? Or different parts of the face being better or worse?

I love it.  For one, it’s just nicer to look at which inspires confidence, but performance wise I couldn’t be happier.  I’m hitting more fairways.  Distance seems about the same, maybe a tad longer, but it’s not a fair apples to apples comparison.  Ball speed has been consistent across models on center strikes although ball flight and consistency have improved.

I played heavy weight forward in a 10.5 turned down to 9.5 with a TX Ventus Blue TR in the old TD so this most certainly affected forgiveness.  Spin was a touch high with weight back in old TD for me which is why I played the heavy weight forward.

In the Smoke I moved to an 8 with the heavy weight back, turned up to 10 and put a green Hulk in it.  I’m hitting flat missiles with much better dispersion and spin is still staying under 2300.

All that said, my miss is towards the toe and these would produce nasty snap hooks that started left and finished further left in my old TD setup.  In my new Smoke TD I lose marginal distance on these misses but the ball starts right of middle with a slight draw usually finishing in or just off the fairway.  I don’t know how much of this is the combo and/or weight configuration, but I’ve found a combo that works for me and that’s what counts.

If you liked the old TD, I’m not sure you’ll find anything to dislike about the new Smoke.

Thanks for the in depth write up! Got me excited about the change now!

My ss is 118-120 and I find myself cracking faces from time to time.  Faces on modern heads are super thin today to promote high ball speeds.  Faces cracking/caving in are more prone as a result.  Swinging over 115 is prone to failures, IMO.
