Thoughts on a returning golfers new set?

Recommended Posts

Thoughts on my new (to me) set of clubs?

I started playing golf in middle school, and played all through high school and college and then some. But fell off once I had kids and then covid…

I’m trying to get back into golf after 7+ years off and decided to treat myself to an upgraded new set of clubs.

I have had the same set of 40 year old ping eye 2’s and other hand me down clubs since high school 20 years ago.

New set:

Driver: Rogue ST Max
3 wood: Rogue ST Max
Hybrid 4: Rogue ST Max
Irons: Ping g425 (5-pw)
Putter: Odyssey 2 ball

Was hoping to be around $1k. After taxes I’ll be at $1,100 and still need some wedges, might go the Maltby route

I'd leave off the 3-wood, either in favor or a 5-wood or a 3-hybrid or maybe just start out with 4-hybrid as your longest non-driver club. If you're going to be struggling with regaining your swing and maybe not making great contact with the ball at first, a 3-wood is going to be a stroke-waster from the fairway.

And using 3-wood instead of driver from the tee is far too "strategic" (i.e. overthinking, making things more complicated than they have to me) unless you're a really long hitter who won't have room to fit your driver shots into most holes. That's a couple hundred buck savings, right there.

Get the UW (gap wedge) for the G425 set. Another iron is more useful than a specialty wedge in that spot.

Go with wedges that have some sole width and plenty of bounce. If you get the G425 UW you'll just need two, probably a 54 and a 58 or maybe 54 and 60. You will no doubt see numerous suggestions here that a 58 or 60 degree wedge is evil and you should never even touch one, much less put it in your bag. Ignore them, that's bull.

They're probably budget busters for you at this point but the Callaway CB wedges are pretty awesome IMO. The older version (Mack Daddy CB) were just as good and you might find a better deal on them.

I like your basic choices, the Rogue stuff is great for driver and hybrids and any Ping G-series irons are outstanding for the level your games going to be the next few years. BTW, if you can find a good deal on G400 or even G irons they are IMO just as good as G425. Might save you another couple hundred.

I agree with not needing the 3W.

A Callway CB sand wedge would be a great choice if you must buy something now.

Learning to use bounce off firm turf is a highly useful skill that will save strokes.  As well as having confidence in your bunker play.

I have the old ones in 54, 58,and 60.  The new ones have microspheres and a shiny chrome finish.

I would hold off for a few months until you get your swing back.

Then get a proper fitting.  Or lessons.  I scrapped the swing I learned as a tiny kid. It was horribly off balance.  My new swing is rotational and works well on wet tee boxes.

Most folks need lessons to do that.

As a stroke survivor I have twenty years of experience figuring it out on my own, though my therapists were wonderful when the Insurance Company paid them.

Shaft flexes are very rough approximations, like clothing sizes.

I never would have guessed that driver would be Senior Flex while my irons and wedges are ladies flex.

Or that I'm the rare bird that can hit a 3HL off the deck with a slow swing speed!

Wait, somebody coming back to golf now after a long layover?!?!

Just giving you a hard time OP. Welcome back!  The game has been flooded with golfers who have either come back to or picked up the game post pandemic. Good to see the game growing again, even if it meant it harder to get tee times and more expensive, lol.

Agree with everyone else to dump the 3-wood.  Modern day 5-woods are longer than they used to be and way easier to hit off the deck than a 3-wood. And with drivers becoming more forgiving the 3-wood as the 'safe option off the tee' isn't needed by most of us. Also good advice on the older PING series. There has been SO much good equipment made the last decade that you can find a lot of things that work for any budget.

As someone who played PING irons for years and tried everything when it came, out, the G25 line was the best iron G series iron of the series. I'd play those again in the heartbeat over the G30/G400/G425 group.

I think those 425's are great clubs. You could play those the rest of your life, no matter how good you get. I know that I should still be playing them. But I'm like the rest of the people on here. Never content. I won't get rid of them though, I know I will end up back in them at some point.

Bought the irons and rogues through golfpartnerusa who had better pricing than anywhere else I saw for used clubs.
