Advice requested- P770 vs P790 forgiveness

Yeah, I have been dealing with that exact issue lately. Yesterday, for example- pin was 210 yards out on a par 3. I played a 5 iron (my Stealth 21 degree) and hit a good shot (for me). Dead straight, pitched just in front of the green. It rolled all the way through and off the back. Same exact shot and scenario on a par 4 in my last round, same result.

This is the reason I dropped my 790s and went to the 770, and now the mp245 bent weak.  Distance is nice but not at the expense of playability.

As for your actual question... I would re-shaft the P770s.  You said it yourself, you want those shafts, they are non negotiable.  So you lose $0 buying them in my opinion, because they are the constant in your end goal for golf.  Play with them for 1-2 months, and then decide, do you need more forgiveness or not?  If you do, by then the 2023 P790s will be on the BST and you can grab a few heads for your long irons and make a combo set, or buy a full set, and have your Axioms installed, and then you sell your 770s.  Seems like a win/win to me.

Good luck!

Yeah, I think this is the play for sure.

The 790s are fractionally more forgiving but the lack of spin off the mid to long irons make them unplayable for me.  If you’re a low spin player who can hit a green with a 5-7i u better hit it a mile in the air to offset the low spin.

I disagree with this. I’m a low spin player and have no issues stopping a 5-7i on the green with the latest p790. Sure it doesn’t spin back but it’s a hop and stop. Having come from ping g irons it’s a world of difference.

A little update for anyone who was following this-

My 770's came back from the builder late last Saturday. In the interim, my club pro has offered to trade me his P790's, built to the exact same specs (Axiom 105s, 1/2" long, 1 degree upright.) I have played with the 770's twice (Sunday and yesterday/Thursday) and had a couple of range sessions with them as well. I had a session where I bought down his 790 8 iron and hit it as well.

I'm 90% sure I am keeping the 770's and not trading. As far as "forgiveness" is concerned, I really can't tell the difference, and have found I greatly prefer the look of the small clubhead and the way it frames the ball. I also really like the ball flight on a well struck shot.

Most likely, if I do anything it'll be to swap out the long iron heads for 790's bent weak. BUT I think I'd rather just spend more time practicing with them until I confidently hit them well.

Anyhow, I am definitely not the intended market for these irons. However, the more traditional lofts work well for me (I have no issue de-lofting the club) and the small top line, small soles, and small heads definitively do NOT intimidate me. From what I understand, the larger heads, more offset, and thicker topline are all intended to produce a more "confidence inspiring look" and for me the result is the opposite.

Overall, scoring is similar thus far, I don't feel like I'm giving up strokes playing them. My first round with them I produced a relatively poor score, but the greens were diabolically fast that day with pins in very challenging locations, and putting is primarily what drove the score up that round. The second round with them was one of my best so far this year.

Thank you! As to the tennis elbow- it's something I've been dealing with since I started golfing, and I could fill a whole thread with everything I've done to address it. In short- cortisone (twice) didn't fix it, time off didn't fix it, the only things that have "worked" are being diligent with PT exercises, especially Tyler Twists, and icing them. That, combined with constantly working on my swing flaws to reduce stress on the elbows. Fortunately, I'm at the point now where I can hit a full bag of balls on the range, play 18 holes, come back and hit another bag and play another 18. It used to be bad enough that I could only hit 20-30 shots every other day and deal with pain on the back 9 on days I played.

My hope is that graphite shafted irons bring me another step closer to "curing" the problem.

You should really work with a sports medicine specialist who understands how to fix tennis elbow. Not easy but also not hard
