reducing offset on a double bend putter

bunta

Recommended Posts

The putter is an Odyssey Ai-One Double Wide with a double bend and full shaft offset.

I desperately want to put a single bend zero offset shaft into this head. Can someone help lol ?

Edit: edited title. and context.

the new plan is to reduce the offset on a double bend putter. At the moment it has a full shaft offset. I'd be very happy if i can reduce it by half to end up with 1/2shaft offset. I need ideas. What can i do ?

It can be done, just very carefully. You'll have to have the hosel bent to a vertical angle and you'll risk breakage. That being said, I've bent the stud on odyssey putters quite a lot and have been able to avoid breakage.  You just go slow and feel if it doesn't want to bend anymore.

You will likely break the spud that attaches the shaft to the head as a single bend shaft needs to be at 90º to the head.  It might not break or it might and you have a $300 paperweight.

bare with me guys, im not a clubmaker. Just trying to relay as much information as i can to the clubmaker so he knows what to expect before agreeing to this job.

@03trdblack where is the stud ?? im guessing its some sort of a metal piece that will reveal itself when you pull the shaft ??  like inside the hosel??

@Socrates What is the "spud" ?

Yes, the shaft attaches to a metal stud/spud and you will see it when you take off the shaft.  With the double bend shaft, it will be angled toward the putter face a little bit.  In order to use the single bend shaft, you'll have to have that stud/spud bent up to 90*.  It will look like this picture.

@03trdblack damn, this isnt looking good lol. What did you use to bend it straight up ? Isnt it gonna touch the hosel after you bend it ?? Or did you put the shaft in first, and then bend it ??

Install the shaft first and then bend it on a putter bending loft/lie machine.

What should i expect to happen to toe hang? At the moment, theres about a 15degree toe hang. Toe pointing at around 8:30. Slightly below face balanced.

with a single bend, Is it going toe up possibly ? Like above face balanced ??

There's no way to really answer that fully without knowing how high up the bend in the single bend shaft is. The head won't hang toe up though, there's too much weight in the toe.

i didnt even know that the height of the bend was a consideration lol. So it all depends on where i buy it from ???

Most single bends are going to be around the same height although you can cut off some length to change the height.  The height of the bend is going to be almost irrelevant in regards to the toe hang.  IF (big IF) you are able to bend the spud to 90º the head will now hang toe-down almost at 90º.

Thank you for that info.

This is becoming a hopeless situation lol. Problem is i refuse to part with this head, but i cant deal with the offset. I need to somehow get rid of the offset, or least reduce it to half shaft offset as opposed to full shaft.

any ideas ? anyone ??

It's great that you are willing to try things.  It's just that it's a new $300 putter and you don't seem to have a lot of experience.  I just don't want you to have a $300 paperweight if things go sideways.  Buy a $25 putter at a flea market and have a go at it first.

It's just a putter shaft that's toast if it doesn't work out. Easy and cheap experiment.

Oh no no no, i will not be doing this myself. It will be my local GG club tech. I was just tryin to gather as much information as i can so i can relay to him so he knows what to expect. My assumption is that this will be first time hes doing this.

Tip trimming doesnt sound too complicated.. but i am worried about heating up the hosel that is literally next to the putter face insert. Not sure if you guys have seen the new Ai-One but the insert along with all that tech inside that "window" are all sitting right there. Im concerned about the heat it will be exposed to..

So if it doesn't work and he doesn't like it, will he be able to restore it to the previous condition?  A lot of these shafts are proprietary and an aftermarket one doesn't always match.  Then if he really doesn't like it, he will get next to nothing when he wants to sell.

Sounds like he is getting the work done by someone who is going at this for the first time. (But, I saw it on YouTube and it looked easy...).  If he screws it up, who pays for the mistake?  It's one thing to give this to a competent club repairer, but this doesn't sound like the case.

There's nothing proprietary about an Odyssey putter shaft. You can get them at Golfworks.

Then cut away.  It won't solve his problem, but he can try it.

You have that backwards.  Double bends have a vertical mounting position.  A single bend shaft (really a modified double bend in most cases) gets its offset from the mounting angle.  Not the shaft.  Hence the single bend definition, only bend is lie angle.  A single bend shaft in a vertical mounting position would have zero offset

The insertion angle can vary depending on how the shaft is designed.  I've seen double bends inserted at 90° and I've seen single bends at 90°.  Also have seen both at various angles less than 90°.  This particular head has an insertion less than 90° for use with this particular shaft.  Which ever shaft is going to be used (single or double bend) is going to require the spud to be bent to some degree depending on the shaft used.

The spuds on these putters are very soft and easy to bend. Quite a few tour pros don't like the visual, and offset, of the Odyssey double bend. They have the spud bent and try shafts trimmed to get the right offset, toe hang and look to their eye. Off the top of my head I remember Paul Lawrie doing this with a 2 Ball and Jim Furyk with his Wide blade.
