Need travel help… London to Scotland

Hello fellow Wrxers… I am traveling to Scotland next week but planning on stopping in London first. My plan is to train from London to Scotland on LNER boarding at Kings Cross and getting off at Edinburgh Gateway (basically the airport). I saw LNER has a fairly strict luggage policy and was wondering what the protocol is for traveling with golf clubs? I will have a backpack, a luggage (big enough that would have to be checked for a flight) and my clubs in their Clubglove travel case. I am planning on buying a first class ticket. Has anyone ever traveled this route or with this train company and have you had any issues with the size of your luggage? TIA for all your help!

They only allow one checked bag. You might get a flight around the same price as a train first class ticket plus extra bag charges.

I've never taken a train from London to Scotland, but I have flown from London to Edinburgh, Prestwick,  Aberdeen  and Inverness without problem. The flights are quick and pretty inexpensive. The downside is the time at the airport.

I must say, I’m surprised to read this living in the U.K. Folk take all sorts onto trains here, prams etc. 

 

There are overhead racks and pukka storage areas at the entrance / exits to coaches. It’s usual to ticket/ reserve seats via the Web so I recommend booking a seat close to these dedicated storage areas where you can watch your gear. 
 

if my recall is correct, there’s usually single seating close-by these last areas.

I usually do that journey on a motorcycle...lol.  There is not much space for luggage on our trains but I've never come across a restriction on how many bags. 1st class is not all that special or different from the rest of the train tbh. Internal flights are pretty good and probably cheaper than the train. Could hire a car in be in charge of your own destiny.

Sounds like a nice trip. I'm sure you won't be the first passenger they've had with a golf bag. On their website they have a picture of a golf bag in the "luggage allowance link" and it states;

"These may need to be placed in dedicated storage areas onboard. Please ask a member of our team for assistance."
