Leadbetter on Wie:

“from a world beater to someone who can hardly make the cut.”
http://www.ontgolf.ca/g4g/2008/03/26/leadb...y-make-the-cut/

“This girl is so talented, she could do anything she wants to do in the world of golf. But people in her camp — and I’m not going to name them — have been a bit off on what she can and can’t do. It is tough that she’s a part-time golfer, unlike the other girls who work at it 24/7. In the past she’d go to school, pick it up and just play. Now there’s a lot more pressure on her. These girls — Lorena Ochoa, Paula Creamer, Annika — these girls are good. And it is hard for Michelle to be a bit player.

Leadbetter had some other interesting notes. Ernie Els, who has worked with Leadbetter for 20 years, was seen with Butch Harmon at the CA Championship on the weekend. Leadbetter said that makes sense, especially since he isn’t out on tour full-time any longer. Leadbetter added:

It is tough for a player like Ernie, a player looking for something.

Playing part time simply does not work. She needs to dedicate herself to golf or school. Not both. Her parents are probably still in her ear directing her steps. It's truly becoming sad.

i think it's good that she's taking some time to have a college experience and everything that entails, like having a boyfriend. when she was still in high school playing the women's tours, she never struck me as someone with the level of maturity needed to sustain a professional career (unlike, say, paula creamer). hopefully her time at stanford will give her some perspective and she'll grow up a little bit.

her mom followed her to college?! that is sooooo pathetic. i assume that since she will not be using her degree for anything business related, she is just going to college for the experience. i'm confused, because getting away from you parents is probably the biggest part of the experience (learning to be independent)

Her mom lives full-time in Palo Alto. How many kids grow up to be proper adults when their parents follow them to college?

There are a ton of commuter college kids and depending if you worked your way through college or were stipend through doesn't really teach you much.

for your average person you are definitely right. but we are talking about a girl that is set for life. she isn't at college to improve her human capital like most people are, she is there for something else. financial considerations aren't her motivation i'm sure.

this is why i find it very odd that wie would find bring her mom along when it really isn't necessary. from my experience, college is a time to branch out and find yourself. i really think she is defeating the whole reason why she is going to college

It really doesn't matter how much money you have. Lots of retired and wealthy people go to college. There are many kids that may go to college to please their parents but they still end up learning and improving themselves even if they drop out. I can see where you are coming from but to question why some goes to college is a bit off.

i see that too. by no means am i belittling her for going to college, in fact i find it admirable. i wish they required it for other sports, especially basketball. have you heard these guys on tv? i'm embarrassed for them.

i just question why an extremely affluent young woman would allow her mother to follow her. there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason for it...as far as we know. if her mother were ill or something like that i could understand. but disastrous prognosis aside, it just doesn't seem to fit....

i guess my point is, if she can't learn to be independent now, when she has the perfect opportunity...will she ever?

She still has enough room from her parents to date Robin Lopez of the Stanford basketball team. :cheesy:

Let's see if we can prove our point on why M. Wie threads always get locked. We were just called forum Nazis and if people want to push a point then we can lock this one too.

Its pretty simple if she wants to go to school she needs to forget about the LPGA for a while

and if she wants to play the LPGA she needs to send Mommy and Daddy back to the Island the girl is not mature enought to make these decisions

I am honestly not sure we will ever see her full talent and what a waste that was.

Huh? How are you guys forum nazis?

Anyway, I think that the problem with Wie is her parents most likely didn't give her the option to say no to their accompanying her to college. I doubt that she really had a say.

My bad if I got off topic. My only point was that I think from what I have heard she is enjoying the experience of college and is allowed some separation from her parents. I also applaud her statement that she wants to finish college no matter the length of time. That is pretty admiral in my opinion. :cheesy:

Funny, she was one of the top players in the world playing part-time before she was injured. How do the "experts" explain that?

An expert I know- an instructor says it's the swing changes her instructor taught her. Says he de-lagged her.

If that's true, then why do full time tour players havetheir games go in the tank after doing swing changes. I guess it doesn't have anything to do with being on the tour part-time.

Finally, Leadbetter said if given the choice of picking Tiger or the field at the Masters, he’d take Tiger. Oh, and he’s got a teenage student currently who flies the ball 350 in the air and can run the 100-metre in 10.7 seconds. That’s where the new Tiger will be found Leadbetter said. From among a group of new athletes embracing the game.

they are trying to replace Tiger already...It will take more then a 10.7 dash and 350 in the air to do it.
