New irons for a shorter guy, how flat?

Go to www.pinggolf.com and click on their custom fitting program and take the measurements yourself. I'm around 5'7.5" and am looking into getting my first set of irons made to my specs. My wrist to ground is right at 33" and I was suggested 0.75 degrees flat at standard length. So I'd say that two degrees seems about a degree too flat but I've never seen your swing either so better just check your lie angle on a hitting board.

You really need to get fitted on a lie board. Static measurements are only part of the equation, and can have very little bearing on the end results. I am 5'7" with very long arms (32" wrist to floor). On the lie board, I am only 1/2 to 1 degree flat. I could get to that measurement by going 1/2" short (for each 1/2" shorter, you get about a 1 degree flatter lie angle), or by bending them 1 degree flat. I've chosen to play my clubs at standard length and lie because it works for me. As an experiment, I had the 6 and 7 iron from my last set of irons that I still have bent 1 degree flat. I didn't like it at all. It resulted in the high rights.

The bottom line is that you need to hit the clubs on a lie board. That will tell you what you need to know.

Your salesman is an idiot, and an ill prepared idiot at that, if he simply looked at your height and said you automatically should play flat lie angles. I've been fitting clubs for 20+ years and nothing could be further from the truth. There are 5'1" guys who need upright lie angles, and there are 6'7" guys who need flat lie angles. It all depends on how YOU swing the club. If the guy didn't test you on a lie board, then simply walk out, save your money and go to someone who has a clue about what they're doing.

If you're a player that is over 2* or so out of your static guidelines, then that's just a swing flaw. I believe that all beginners shouldn't even bother with a lie board at first; simply play with the lie angles that your static measurements dictate. Then after you've grooved a consistent swing you should get them tweaked to your specs. If someone is 5'1" tall and needs an upright iron, or a 6'7" player using flat lie angles then they need lessons first, not a lie angle fitting.

Yes the lie board is a must. I'm 5'6" and usually come up 2 - 3* flat, usually 3* and only if it can be done. It depends on what specs the clubs are starting from. I also believe in testing several clubs, usually a long, mid and short iron, just to be sure. However I never get the lies checked afterwards as some have suggested doing, as they can change. Maybe this spring. With all the ho-ing most of us do its often a mute point.

go to www.pinggolf.com and use the iron web fit

wear street shoes when you do the height and wrist to floor measurement

Hey-

I am in the final stages of purchasing new irons. I'm on the shorter side, about five seven. And the salesman said I should either cut them down an inch, or get them two degrees flat. I don't want to cut them down, but is two degrees flat right? I'm just looking for a double-check. Thanks!

I'm 5'7" and after making assumptions and mistakes I found that the lie board doesn't lie and I'm playing

- 1/2" standard lie. I tried standard length and flatter lies but they just didn't work as well for me. You can't tell lie by just looking at the club at address. Even with x100s I found with a lie board that the clubhead flattens some from being swung. I tried the lie boards that you can buy but found in a pinch at a friends house that masking tape on the bottom of the club and standing and swinging on a piece of plywood works just fine.

FWIW... I'm 6'2" and I play 1/4" over and 2* flat based on Titleist 735 standard specs. Remember standard means different things from company to company.

try electrical tape on ply wood works really well.

Remember, it is your height and wrist to floor measurement that determine the optimum shaft length and lie angle.

The length of the club has a big impact on centeredness of hit. It also has impact on your strike as well, for example too long a shaft and you will stand up out of the strike to make room for the club. The lie angle influences direction. Both factors are critical to quality iron shots so it is important that you get a fitting session, a few minutes with some impact tape and a few demo clubs will confirm your requirements.

I am 5ft 7ins and 33 1/2 inches wrist to floor, at a recent Callaway fitting session I found a significant improvement on strike quality with clubs 1/2 inch shorter than standard. (X-20 Tour 6 iron: length 37.0 inches, lie 60.5 degrees)

One final point, note your measurements and take care if you are looking at clubs from different manufacturers as they ALL have different specifications.
