Rules for the Green Jacket

Just saw a photo in the local paper of Trevor wearing his green jacket (obviously not tailored) in New York. It was my understanding (now wrong) that the green jacket did not leave Augusta.

 

I say not tailored since the sleeves are too long and the lower hem is a good 3" longer than it should be. I guess it may be his preference to have it longer but just throwning in my observation.

 

This thread is really about the rules of the green jacket and not about fashion do's and don'ts.

I think Bomb and Gouge is right. They let you keep it for a year, but when you come back to Augusta next year it stays in your locker.

I think I read or heard that at first they just give you some member's green jacket that's big enough for you (makes sense since they present the jacket minutes after the final putt.) Then sometime during the year or maybe at the following year's Masters you get the jacket that's tailored for you. I can't confirm this since I haven't won the Masters or been invited to join Augusta National yet. :D

A. Yes and sort-of. Yes: The Masters champion gets to take the Green Jacket home with him and keep it for a year. When he returns to Augusta National the following year, he returns the jacket to the club.

 

Which brings us to sort-of: From that point on, the champion has "visitation rights" to his Green Jacket. The jacket is considered his, and when he visits Augusta National at any point thereafter, he can retrieve and wear his jacket.

 

The official website of The Masters explains a little further:

 

"Near the conclusion of the Masters, several Jackets are selected which could fit the possible winner during the presentation ceremony. The winner will have his measurements taken at the Club's Golf Shop or may provide measurements so that a custom made Green Jacket can be tailored. Typically, a multiple winner will have only one Green Jacket unless his size drastically changes."

What would have happened if Zach Johnson (or any other Masters defending champion) wasn't playing (illness, injury, personal reasons, retirement etc.) this year, who would have presented the jacket to Trevor? Has this ever happened? Just curious...

Same thing that would happen if you won the Masters for a second year in a row; the chairman would present the jacket.
