Nick Faldo's Equipment

The Clip where Nick talks about his "life today", with CBS is really great and very revealing. Its clear he really enjoys commentating. Ken Venturi (was with CBS some 25+ years I think) IMO was one of the best at it and he was always in the 18 tower calling all the shots. It be great if Nick continues his gig in the booth with CBS and the Golf Channel, he's really great at it and like Ken Venturi knew what was going on out there in the fairway. Good stuff Gachet !

Thinking about it, there was another absolute belter I was lucky enough to see in person during Faldo's prime. In the 1989 PGA Championship he pushed his tee shot out right and ended up on a hard bit of spectator walkway down the right of Wentworth's 15th hole on Sunday. He was 180 yards or so away, under some overhanging tree branches, but was lucky enough to have a clear swing and a perfect, bare lie from which to play the shot - which by necessity had to be a bit of a Darth Fader around some trees ahead. A masterful shot with a 5-iron followed, a cheeky little running punchy cutter that curved perfectly around the trees ahead and bimbled its way up to only four feet or so from the hole for a crucial (and, as it turned out, championship-winning) birdie. Remember him victory leaping off the face of that front greenside bunker at Wentworth's 18th hole in a dodgy red and blue Pringle ensemble?

Mate, I just dug the footage out of this shot and wow, that sure was a cracker seeing it cut and curve under and around those overhanging trees to leave a fairly straight forward putt for birdie on a hole where par is usually a good result.

Like you say it was basically a championship winning birdie since Woosnam was up ahead and had just eagled the last.

I will put it up on here later this week...................cracking shot !

Aha, the best of BBC golf! I always thought they showed very little of Faldo in this. Another good clip is of Faldo hitting a beautiful draw with a mid-iron from the left rough on the 13th at wentworth during the '91 matchplay! Great job

Boom!

I've got alot of bbc footage of faldo on vhs but i cant convert, if i got it put on dvd would you want a copy of the dvd? Things like the suntory 1989, a charity special with the big 5 around wentworth, masters 3rd and 4th rounds 1990 are really good.

Does anyone have the bbc fotage of the 1990 open? I've got all the highlight tapes of open, us, and masters but i'd love to see the actuall bbc stuff!

great job by the way!

If we're applauding cheeky hooks around the corners at Wentworth, there's a belter out there from Woods in the '98 Woods/O' Meara final. On the 17th. I saw that one from the other side of the hole. It was a quite startling bit of check side on it. A real banana-job.

If it's the one that they held on the Thursday before the PGA Championship that Woosie won, I'd pay real money to see that again.

One of the best I saw on telly was by Frank Nobilo, I think it was the week after the Open so it may have been the Dutch Open, he played a cracking low hook with a wedge out of thick rough. It just looked good.

Watching all this Wentworth footage makes me incredibly sad. They should have never have gone near that hallowed ground with more than a shovel let alone the Sherman tank they used to blow the place to bits with. I know Ernie tried to do it sympathetically but the guys with the final say should have watched some of this footage to see what they'd be missing. If they wanted to make the course more of a test they should have done it more organically. Grow the rough two foot high, bring the fairways in a few yards, split the fairways on half the par 5's and 4's so players can't drive it more than 270 yards.

The course has such a great history and I'm sure if most of us walked around a few years ago we'd be saying 'Seve did that shot here,' or 'remember that Faldo shot from this spot?'

Now we'd be standing in three feet of water....

Don't get me started.

A Surrey section plod should have been in the local nick's custody suite before now, with a 'Morning sarge. I've got two for you. Caring and Els, they're called. Both local. Both on suspicion of criminal damage to a classic golf course. Is the flight of stairs round the back available?'
