Rifle Spinner tipping

still a mystery!

I purchased a small amount of 5.0 Rifle shafts plus a 5.5 spinner to see if could figure out how the spinner started life and how much tip trimming was done.

So the Rifle's 5.0 s were 228 cycles plus /minus 0.3 only.The previous ones I purchased were 223-227 cycles.so these may have been the high end of the allowed frequency?

The Spinner was 233.1 cycles and was tipped 5 1/4 inches.

so it started life only 5 cycles higher than the 5.0 flex and was tipped only 3/8 less than a normal sw.

so were the 5.0 's a bit high and maybe the spinner was a raw 6.0?

not enough of a sample but a start!

Spinners are softer tip shafts so they likely did take a 6.0 or 6.5 and undertrimmed it to 5.5....or something like that.

 

Measure the parallel tip section and compare those as well.

I was comparing it to untrimmed 1 iron shafts.

 

so the parrallel section 5 1/4 less than the 1 iron shaft ,will measure that when I get back home

 

 

just trying to unravel what should be very simple.

just confirmed that my other 5.0 1 irons Rifle shafts which are installed in clubs but awaiting grips were 222.9 and 227.1 cycles on the shaft label.

 

so that is 5- 6 cyles difference in raw shafts? all supposed to be 5.0 flex?

There is a "range" of shafts that make up the 5.0 Blank shaft flex - not a single CPM reading.

 

Unless you order blanks to be matched, they will fall within this range.

 

A Spinner is made by taking a stiffer blank and trimming the tip less than you would a normal wedge shaft.

A bit of time ago, I spoke on the phone with A Royal Precision rep. He told me that a spinner shaft was the untipped 8 iron shaft out of the set, and used for the SW & LW.

i can understand that with blanks but they were 1 iron shafts.So really some are 4.8 flex and some are 5.3 flex? I guess that 225 cpm represents the mid point and the raw flex of the actual 5.0 flex.

 

If you were using say 8 1 iron shafts,with these raw frequencies , to make a set of irons would you adjust the tipping to take into account the range of cpms? or sort them into low/high for the longest to the shortest?I know 3/16 is one cpm.

 

I have a spreadsheet which takes everything into account ie length,swingweight,bore depth etc and this is another variable.

When a "set" of Rifle shafts is made at the factory, the blanks are frequency sorted to +/- 1 cpm and then tip trimmed to "specs" - not individually frequency matched.

 

Since 1 Iron shafts are not going into the same "set" they are not matched to each other. If they were ever bundled in a set, they would have been matched to that set as blanks. If they were never in a set, they would simply have been tipped to the standard and boxed as 1 irons.

 

If you want a matched set building from 1 iron shafts, you will need to trim them by either using a frequency meter or adjusting the trimming to fine tune the flex where 1 cpm = approximately 3/16".

 

MrParr1Noid, you either mis-heard the Royal Precision rep or they told you the wrong thing. The Spinner is NOT the 8i shaft from the same flex set. If you want a 5.5 Spinner you need to start with a stiffer Rifle Blank. The butt frequency of the Spinner matches the butt frequency of the Wedge shaft - however the tip is softer. The 8i shaft would have a much lower butt frequency if it were taken from the same flex set and used in a wedge.

 

As a Certified Rifle Center, I've been through school (and visited the factory) to learn how to manipulate Rifle shafts from blanks, so know the exact "recipe" to create a Spinner or a set of Flighted shafts from blanks.

thanks again,getting clearer.

 

If i have the 1 irons shafts i will use the middle freq (say 225 for the 5.0)and adjust from there.I have a maths background and hopefully its not that difficult.

 

I will also check as to the relationship between frequency and weight.I did hear that the best way to match Rifles was to start with the 1 iron shafts and sort them into ascending weight order in the set.
