Srixon I-701

Recommended Posts

  • Pocket cavity structure effectively lowers and deepens CG
  • Satin finish (partly mirror and shot finish)
  • Soft 1025 carbon steel body
  • Clean set up, progressive offset and traditional profile
  • Soft, 1020 carbon steel face and variable thickness means responsive feel and larger high COR area
  • Delivers an extremely stable clubhead through impact and makes it easier to get the ball airborne for high, straight iron shots

Got fitted for a new set of 701's today after demo'ing Cobra FP, Titleist AP1 and AP2, and the 701's. The Srixon clubs were by far the best clubs in terms of both distance and shot dispersion.

The Cobra FP is a nice club, but I was losing distance....they just didn't seem to have any pop to them, although I did hit them very straight. I was really interested in the new line of Titleist clubs but was quickly dissapointed by the lack of feel in the AP1. The AP1 is probably best suited for the high handicapper that just needs to hit it high and straight. Had I selected either of these clubs, I would have had to upgrade the shaft for another $25 dollars per club.

The reason that I went with Srixon was due to the excellent stock shaft (Nippon 950) and crazy distance. I hit these clubs 10-15 yards further and my misses still went 90-95% of the intended distance. These clubs seems to go through the ground nicely and feel really solid at impact. I also liked that the mishits would provide feedback and was not dampened by the shaft or clubhead. The only negative aspect of buying this set is that they do not offer a 4-GW configuration, so I had to go with the 3-PW.

I had to special order the clubs (i.e. length, lie, etc) and won't have them for about a week. I will try to remember to come back and post my thoughts again to see if my initial thoughts hold true.

if you were hitting them 10-15 yards longer, then wouldnt the 4-GW be the same as a normal 3-pw??

just wondering...

  • 1 year later...

I purchased a set of 701s from a member here. They are 2* strong and were re-set to factory lie angles. They are shafted with the Nippon 950 shafts in a stiff flex.

First off ... I have a little arthritis in my hands and was looking for a head that might play a little "softer" than most. These heads, coupled with the Nippons, were extremely soft. However, when I regripped them, I installed Sensicore inserts. WOW is the only way to describe the feel. They are EXTREMELY soft and yet still give enough feedback to know where the ball was struck.

I have been playing Titleist 981s and 804s for several years. The Srixons are playing the same yardages, and are 1/2 club longer in the 4 & 5 irons. With these clubs, I can stretch a shot 4-5 yards when needed, and they are also easy to throttle back.

Some have mentioned that the Nippons play at least 1 flex softer than rated. I have been playing Rifle Flighted 5.0 shafts for 5 years. These Nippons play very similar. The ball flight is high (which I like personally) and very predictable.

All in all, I think that these are going to be my sticks for the next few years. They are everything that I had hoped for ... and more.

UPDATE:

After playing these irons for 25 rounds, I still think that they are the best forgings that I have had the pleasure to own. No problems or complaints. The Nippon shafts are as consistent as any that I have used. After settling down with these irons and getting very consistent with them, they have proven themselves to be a full club longer than the Titleist 804s that I have been playing. Distances and dispersion couldn't be more consistent. And add the fact that these are as forgiving as you'll find ... it's a no-brainer for me. And the feel, coupled with the Sensicore addition, is smooth and pleasant.

I'm liking these so much that I'm currently searching for another set to "put away" for future use when these get worn to the unplayable point.

Hidalgo,
I concur that the 701 series are an excellent set of irons. I also have a set of the PC 701's with Nippon 950 stiffs that I love so well that I recently out of curiosity purchased from a fellow Wrxer a set of 701 tour/combo with project X 5.0's. I would venture to say both sets play similar in flex, with the tour/combo set just a bit more demanding. Either set can be had for a song and I consider them one of the best buys in a forged club currently available.
