Ok so the first ten groups turn under the 4:18 and the next one turns in 4;25 so they jump on them Now every group behind them is going to be at 4;25 do they get on all of them too?

 

Thats my problem with putting the clock on people you have to know whats in front of them.

But you missed my point if one group is slow it does slow down the other groups are going to have to go slower.

Another huge problem is that many of the courses in this area send groups off every 9-11 minutes. The result: A backup on the second hole!

 

So you're basically screwed as soon as you start play...no matter how fast the groups are playing.

 

There are only two public courses in my area that strictly enforce a 4:18 round. If you make the turn 5 minutes behind they're all over you! I love it!!!

In my book there are two types of slowness: Slow play and slow pace. Slow pace is when everyone on the course is moving at the same pace with little waiting, but more slowly than normal. Perhaps it's cart path only, for example, where it affect everyone the same more or less, or the wind is blowing hard, or the ground is really soft and it's hard to walk. This is acceptable to me, because it's all about the waiting.

 

Then there's slow play, where you have to wait every shot because of the actions of the players in front of you, which most of the times those action are avoidable.

 

All I'm asking for is that a player be aware of the situation around him. I play on a couple of leagues. One league we all walk, and I'm ALWAYS 30 yards in front of the people I'm playing with, and I'm not speed walking by any means. I just grab my bag immediately after the last player tees off. I honestly don't know what the hell everyone else is doing. I play with an 82 year old that keeps up with me for crying out loud, and he carries too!

 

When I'm approaching my ball for the 2nd shot, I pull out the range finder so I'm ready to use it when I set the bag down. If my ball is greenside I'm pulling out the 56, 60 and putter when I'm walking up to the green, because my next shot is going to be with one of these clubs. If I putt out first I go and pick up my clubs and towel and tend the stick so I'm ready to get off the green ASAP. When I'm walking up to the tee box I'm pulling out the club that I'm going to use.

 

This ain't rocket science, and getting to your ball more quickly gives you more time over your ball. Just get to your ball when it's safe to do so, and be ready to hit it.

I'm not in any hurry either. But standing on the tee box or in the fairway for five minutes between each shot isn't my idea of fun.

 

When I play with slower players, I'll give a little lesson on "ready golf". I get so embarrassed if my group is holding up the players behind us.

 

When I first started playing tournaments, the slow play absolutely killed me. Ito took me a good year to learn how to deal with slow play, mentally and physically. The 5+ hour rounds would result in a decent front nine and a horrible back nine score. I'd lose focus and interest after about 11 holes or so.

 

Now I try to pace myself and my group so that we're not waiting much even if the group(s) in front of us are incredibly slow.
