Change DG S300 to Project X shafts??

Recommended Posts

I'm swinging bridgestone J33 blades with stock DG S300 shafts, my 6 iron goes about 165-170 yards.

I really like the trajectory of my shots, it swoops fairly high and lands real soft without bouncing more than a yard or 2 further.

Thing is, I find the DG S300 shafts really heavy, i feel like i'm beat up after each round.

Short of growing stronger, would I be able to maintain my ball flight if i were to switch to a lighter shaft like the Project X 5.0, 5.5 or 6.0?

Also, would the J33Bs be capable of switching to the PX shafts? Would my irons feel less harmonized or balanced after the shaft change?

Thanks!

S300's should play closest to a PX 5.5. However, they feel completely different, and with high feedback clubs like you have, you will certainly know the difference. You may like it, you may not. I would recommend reshafting a long and short iron first, and try a practice round - maybe your 4 and 9 irons. What about replacing the DGS300's with DGSLS300's? The other thing to consider is that this may change your swing weight a bit, which could affect your tempo - someone more experienced with this may want to chime in...

I would add that I completely agree with this post. At a demo day I was trying out the AP-2's with the Project x shafts and told the demo guy that they felt terrible for a forged club. He quickly rushed another 6 iron AP-2 with a S300 shaft in it to me and told me to try this one. It was a major difference and from the way that he quickly changed the club I was not the first one to notice this and this was his method of overcoming the objections.

I know a lot of guys on the PGA tour hit the Project X but then again they do a lot of things that we'll never be able to do with a golf ball!!!!

I'm on the flip side of the coin. I have played DGX100's in the last several sets I have owned and just yesterday hit some newly aquired Titleist ZB irons with Project X 6.5's. After reading several posts here about the PX shafts I expected them to be too stiff and rigid with a horrible boardy feel. It was not the case. I was pleasantly surprised to see a favorable ball flight and the feel at impact was great. I hit my r7 TPs with X100's during the same range session and I've decided to game the ZB's.

Thanks for the input everyone.

I've actually tried the PX shafts before on the callaway x-forged and cobra 2008 pro CB and actually do like the feel significantly.

Only thing is that those clubs aren't exactly blades so i'm not yet convinced as to how the PX would feel on my j33b.

I absolutely agree that the best method moving forward would be to try out the PX shafts, most likely on the J36b since it comes stock on these sticks , but until my pro shop brings them in next month or so, i'm happy looking out for everyone's opinion.

So taking playability, club feel, cost of switching shafts, and my difficulty with the weight of the DG S300 all into consideration..... IF i were set on the PX shafts, would it be worth my while to reshaft the J33b or purchase the new j36b altogether?

(I personally prefer the look of the J33b, but wonder if there's any advantage to the shorter hosel length on the J36b)

On a side note, seems that alot of the blades at the pro shop come stock with DG S300 (Mizuno mp-67, titleist 695mb and ZM forged, cobra 2008 pro MB), is there a technical reason why the blades(except the J36b) never come stock with PX ?

I have never played Project X shafts but have played, or tried, the standard Rifle shafts on a few occasions. It has been my experience that DGs are a better feeling shaft and I get great distance from them. I like a heavier shaft anyway so the weight does not bother me. I know the trajectory and response of the DGs since I started playing them with my set of MacGregor Muirfield 20th irons I purchased back in the summer of 1989. I do not anticipate changing shafts in the near future.

Depending on how you like the "stiffness" of the DGS300's, I'd go with 5.0's for lightness and playability......the 5.5's will play stiffer than your DGS300's (here we go again). However, if you could stand a small step up in stiffness, the 5.5's may be fine. Both fine shafts, just different strokes.

I totally agree with you. PX is high kick shaft. that's why the people alwyas feels boardy.

I play PX 5.0 3-P with MP -57. My wedge sets is vokey 52,56,60 with DG S300. I can feel how different they are. DGS300 is soft feeling than PX 5.0.

I think it depend on weight or stiffeness issues. If you like heavy weight, You had better go to DGS300 But, If you like a light weight and less tip action I would recommend PX 5.0. I fiited PX 5.5 but 5.0 is easy control to me. especially 3,4 iron
