Newcomer from central Illinois

Hey guys. It's my first post here. First off, I found this sight by searching for information on gps range finders. There is a wealth of information on this sight and everyone's opinions were very helpful. I've opted to wait another year because golf guru seemed the best for me (good satellite reception) but everyone having trouble with self mapping a course and it only saving some of the holes scared me off. I think I'll wait until they get the kinks out of the software.

I started golf late in high school, and am 26 now. I didn't get serious about trying to improve until late last summer. Currently I shoot anywhere from upper 70s to upper 80s, depending on putting mostly. I've slowed down my swing, and am hitting great drives this year. I hit one 325 last night, and I can usually keep it straight. My iron play used to be my strong suit until I started driving so well this year. My chipping and putting have always been poor. If anyone has a putting drill that works well away from a course I would love to get a link to it. I'm also terrible out of the sand, and I think this is mainly from never researching the proper technique, and also never practicing this shot.

My bag is not in the least bit expensive, but is slowly improving. I try not to spend too much on clubs, because up to this point bad hits were always my fault, and not what I was holding, but as I improve I'm looking at better and better clubs.

Driver: TaylorMade r7 425cc 10.5 stiff shaft
I hit this fairly straight and longer than most in my league, and plan on using it for a while.

3: King Cobra SZ Hyper Steel stiff shaft
The best club in my bag. Always straight. I hit the 3 as well as the "A" players in my golf league. Also the only club in my bag I can consistently work the ball without much worry.

5: ICD Arnold Palmer Mid-Size
This came with the $150 set I got as a gift on my 16th B-Day. I'm pretty good at keeping it straight and it goes over 200 yards. I'd get a Cobra 5 if I could find one on sale sometime soon, but this is not a huge weakness for my game and I just haven't got around to addressing this club.

Irons: Cobra FP's with steel shafts
Just got these last year and am very happy with them. Very few mishits. My biggest problem right now is just not lining the ball up, and frankly that is probably from a lack of concentration.

Wedges: Cobra FP2's w/ steel shafts, Gap and Sand
Ordered these two days ago, which like my irons are customized to lie 2 degrees flat. Right now 100 yards and in is a weakness since I broke my last sand wedge that I liked. I always seem to be next to the 100 yard marker :-).

Putter: Odyssey White Hot XG #7
Bought this two days ago because I liked the feel a lot and in one round and putting around the house I really like it. It was at a local golf store for $80 used and judging from pics I've seen of other putters I would say it is in 8.5/10 condition. First off, should I try and barter him down a little? I'm used to blade style putters so this is a departure for me, but I'm finding putts easier to line up already.

Balls: yellow Top Flight XL2000s
I bring this up because up until now I didn't feel I was decent enough to worry about expensive balls. Should I consider upgrading? One thing I will say is I absolutely LOVE playing the yellow, and I don't know if Pro V 1's or other good balls come in yellow.

Kind of long winded for my first putt, but I look forward to adding my 2 cents in the few spots I'll have intelligent input!

I'm no longer debating on this putter (white hot xg #7) now. Been through 2 rounds with it and am in love with it. Definately going to be a keeper for me.

hey man welcome to golfwrx. Where are you from in Central Illinois? I'm from the Champaign area but currently live in Iowa. Bag looks pretty good but there are a lot of good golf balls for under $30 that you could probably find.

Hey Welcome!

I bought the Guru and have had only 1 issue with a pre-mapped course that had errors, but they re-mapped it and all is well. I think you will be very happy with the Guru. I have friends that have Sky Caddie, & Igolf and they are going to order the Guru towards the end of the month. I wouldn't want to play without a GPS. I now can hit a shot with confidence knowing that the yardage is correct and all I have to do is execute the shot. Good Luck!
