top public courses in and around Lexington, KY

If you are planning to visit Lexington anytime soon, you may want to check out the following courses:
Kearney Hills Golf Links, Tates Creek GC, Picadome GC, Lakeside GC, Golf Club of the Bluegrass, The Bull at Boones Trace, Old Siloh GC, and Cherry Blossom G & CC. Some of these courses are in nearby Nicholasville and Richmond, but are excellent venues. If you are looking for a very nice course for a reasonable price, you should check The Bull, Cherry Blossom, Golf Club of the Bluegrass (some of us locals may still call it Widow's Watch) and Kearney Hills.

well the only course I would play on a regular basis is Kearney Hill, my home course, and the Bull. Best for the money and condition is Houston oaks. But I really play all over central Ky. So to find those best places, I would check out www.golfkentuckylinks.com and play all of the top 18. I have played 12 so far this year.

Kearny Hill is nice, but picadome is nothing special. haven't played the other two

I haven't played Siloh before, but I'm going to play it this fall. By the way, I checked out www.golfkentuckylinks.com and I've played eight of the courses so far.

What about the University Club where UK men and women play? I played in the Kentucky Open there two years ago and they have 36 holes (blue and White courses). Always in great shape and the greens are usually fast.

I used to be a member at university club before Danny sold it. As for Old Silo it is a great track and hardest of anything mentiond here. They did lose their greens keeper, so it has taken some time for them to get it into shape. Greens were in good shape, but bunkers needed work, and lots of clover in the rough, wich they normally don't have.

Old Silo is a GREAT track! You can't go wrong with with that track but you really need to play it a few times to get a feel for it.

I agree with the above post on all the courses, I would rate the ones mentioned in the following order:

Old Silo

Cherry Blossom

Kearney Hills

Houston Oaks

The Bull

and all the rest! Haven't played UK club but I think it is private?

Don't forget Cherry Blossom, hooters tour played there and rough was about 6 to 8" high!!!

First off the University Club is private. I was only tralking about public courses. Secondly, I totally forgot about Cherry Blossom, but I just played there yesterday for a junior tournament (shot 79) and it was in excellent shape. I plan on adding it to the pole options.

What about Griffin Gate? (I think it is Public) It is a nice place to play

I played Griffon Gate once and didn't like it at all. I thought that it was way overpriced for the quality of the course.

University is not really private. All you have to do is call and ask. I would call it Semi Private.

Old Silo is wonderful. Fun elevation changes and awesome layout.

Used to work at the Bull - good track but short. Almost always in great shape. My top 3 in no certain order would be Kearney, Old Silo, and Cherry Blossom.

U Club was private the last time that I checked. I played there earlier this year but they wouldn't let me in for a practice round.

University Club is Semi Private. The Big Blue Course is harder to get on and a little more pricey, but still accessible to the public.

U Club is semi-private, but they do have annual membership options... Big Blue is definitely a tougher test of the two courses....the Wildcat plays much shorter and if the greens are soft there is potential for very low scores

Was in Lexington the week of the Ryder Cup and we just called and asked real nice. If they have openings they will let yu play.

 

The Big Blue course is pretty good. Its fun to try and drive the par 4's like JB Holmes did when he was there. :D
