R7 425

I have been saying this all along, the TaylorMade r7 is pretty much like a computer, once you buy it, they trump it with a better model. It sux and yes, at points, I can see how the weekender gets screwed (no pun intended), but I can also see TM's point about selling. TaylorMade has developed a pretty strong fan base and there is so many enthusist out there that can afford to play TM's game, this is the targeted market. TaylorMade also has a targeted group of players, as well, which certain models are made to fit certain groups. If TaylorMade would have a website explaining their ideas, upcomming models, and who they will be targeting, then more people would understand their motives of mass production, but unfortunately TaylorMade is basically, "BUYER BEWARE" driven.

I really like the computer analogy. Think about it, however. You buy a computer, fully recognizing that something faster or "better" is going to come along at any time. Does that mean that it won't serve your needs well for the next couple of years? No.

Same thing with drivers. Taylor Made (and all golf brands) are in the business of research and development, just like computers. If you knew that there were things that could be done to computers to make them better, but companies didn't develop products for the sake of keeping to product lifecycles, consumers would feel just as "screwed" as it has been put here. The question would change from "Why do they put out so many models," to "Why don't they put out a new model?" It's because of this that everyone is going to have their two cents to put in, and the OEM's will never be able to please everyone.

Now, buy a driver, and be happy with it, with the realization that there will be a "better" model out in no time. You just have to weigh the decision to buy another one based on if the new one is really that much "better." I get a kick out of buying all these clubs that people "dump" for newer models. The OEM's, after all, never say "Oh, the old one was crap!" They just highlight the changes and why it's an advancement. It's all about chasing the almighty dollar. For anyone to claim one OEM isn't guilty of it while another is is ridiculous.

This is usually why I wait for a driver to be on the market for a year or two, before purchasing. I know that's not as much fun, but the prices are usually a lot lower. Better yet, wait for them to be on their way out. You then know that something else is coming down the product pipeline (assuming you haven't found out from this website). Just remember a club ho's work is never done.

By the way, most companies (no matter what industry) are out to make money. If TM has found the model or market niche that works for them, more power to them. If you don't buy their clubs, then maybe they will change their strategy.

My 2 cents for today.

The point is the guy comes into the shop looking for the newest best TM driver and is told 425 is the biggest/best. Next month comes the 460 which TM delayed just to sell the 425 a bit more before they released the 460.

Exactly...then you have to try to look the guy in the face every time he plays your course...

I have really grown to dislike TM over the years because of this topic. (that said I play one of their hybrids and wedges from time to time). I will have a hard time in the future supporting TM.

I think the R7 is a gimmick.....i grew up hitting any club put in my hand...it's not the club folks...it's you and your swing....no club is going to hit a fade or draw just because you mess around with those weights...i bought one and tried it....i'm giving it to my son....lol.....bill... :crazy2:

;) The club works, simple as that. I was having a problem with a hard draw, I reset the weights to encourage a fade and the hard draw was history! ;)

Of course a good swing helps, but I was able to make an overnight improvement in ballflight that would not be possible with ANY other driver. Helped me win a few skins too! :pimp:

#1 for a reason, accept it.

I just havn't notice an impovement for the better since the introduction of the R500 series. All of the new drivers feel a bit on the flimsy side in my opinion.

I just don't get that solid feel like I do with my R510 TP.

I have owned a G5, Launcher 460, R5 dual, R7 quad, FT-3... and I ended selling them all and going back to the R510TP.

Seems like there are a lot of lovers and haters of TM, looking at there line of drivers in the R? range it seems that there is a driver for every type of swing/player, square face TP line, closed faced retail, different sizes different levels of forgiveness, i for one like the old R7 as m eye doesn't like the larger driver. I think they make a driver for every one you just need to do some research a pick what is best for you, instead of buying the latest. Lets be fair the internet along with golf forums like these are a wealth of knowledge if you are going to spend $800 £500 on a driver more the fool you for not doing your research. If TM or whoever are going to launch a new driver its your choice to buy now or wait a few months no one is forcing you to buy anything. Ask yourself a few questions why do you need a new driver?, does this new driver solve any problems? As new driver flood the market there will always be people that will by them regardless, thus creating an opportunity for the likes of you and me to pick up a bargain. Granted TM do this more than normal but if its a trend, then it becomes easier to predict take advantage.

JUST MY 2 PENCE

i bought an R5 bc it tested out better than the R7, launcher, g5...this stuff really doesn't bother me knowing that shaft technology has more impact than any different style of moveable weight clubhead that comes out in the next 5 years...
