WHY..LOW Handicap (wrong equipment???)

Hello all; I was hoping to get some input regarding a couple of my clubs. Per my signature I am back to playing blades..MP-32s and love them. I hit these great with a slight draw and down the target line. My swing is better now than it has ever been..I should be close to a 1 handicap within a few weeks. Anyways, when I set my wrists on the downswing my Callaway X 3 wood and X hybrid I can feel the heel weighting closing the clubface much faster than my other clubs. I have a FT-5 neutral Tour Driver that is great, but I hit these pull hooks with those 2 clubs. I have a 5 wood in closet and thats even worse. Its not the shaft..have the Blueboard 83X in both woods and the VS Proto 80X in hybrid. They may be closed or either very heel weighted would be my guess. Can anyone confirm this. Any recommendations on a neutral weighted 15 deg 3 wood and 19/20 deg hybrid that is not closed.

While I am nowhere near your handicap and am most likely not qualified to offer advice, I too had problems hitting my Callaway FT 3 hybrid when I first purchased it. I couldn't understand how everyone in the world said hybrids were so easy to hit and all the professional instructors would always say "you don't know how many shots you are giving away if you don't have a hybrid in the bag".

 

I can swing and hit my 3i just fine, but had a tough time with the 3 hybrid. I would pull hook it everytime. It lined up funny to me and just looked funny to me. Turns out it was the fault of my take away and swing. I really have to focus and concetrate and making a good swing to hit the hybrid straight.

I love my Callaway FT-i tour driver, but like you, have never been able to control their fairway woods or hybrids. Every time I've tried one I hit an uncontrollable hook. My only guess is that they have a closed face. I believe the tour drivers are 1* open. I just wanted to let you know that I share your experience with Cally fairways and hybrids.

Before you buy a new club, I'd but a roll of lead tape and slap some on the toe of both of those clubs. See what happens. It's debateable how much it'll actually affect ballflight, but mentally it might do wonders for you. :)

I have come up with a list of some hybrids with anti-left tendencies..Sonartec HB-1, Titleist585H, Bridgestone J36, Mizuno CLK, and Adams Idea Pro. Any recommendations and these.

Callaway, especially the woods, are always a couple of degrees closed. If you have a natural draw, as I do, you will hit it left more often then not. You have to slightly open the face, the tiniest bit, and take your normal swing. I have had the Steelhead Plus 3 wood for a number of my years in my bag now, I love it! But I don't like how Callaway closes the face on most if not all their clubs.

Adams. Try my leadtape reco first though unless you've just got a major ho urge. :)

Like jbarbour, I am not the golfer you are, but I was having the same problem with my driver and 3 wood. My pro fixed me up. The fact that you are PULL-hooking might mean that with these clubs you are coming over the top, maybe over-swinging. My pro had me open my stance and consentrate on swinging toward second base until I got over the pull. It worked. Now I am on to new swing problems.

IMO its probably not the clubs, 4 handicaps are capable of making bad swings fairly often. I've hit both of the clubs you are talking about and there is just no way that you can feel the heel weighting of the club closing down the face. I mean you can go out and buy new clubs like an Idea Pro but I'd bet you are still going to hook them. I'm a +2 and I have an Idea Pro Gold and when I miss it goes left...its not the club its my swing.

You will need a massive amount of lead tape to change the CG and alter ballflight...I think 30+g's which just won't happen.

 

As for nuetral heads...Give adams a shot...I've had my idea pros for over a year.

You'd be amazed at what a little lead will do if you believe it works. :)

I would say its not the clubs, check the swing weight, or if possible get some camera time when swinging those clubs compared to say a 5 iron

something is causing it and it could be over swinging them to try and elevate the ball off the deck

 

those 2 clubs unless they are draw biased should not cause a hook, the path thru impact causes a hook

Sounds like you got the ball too forward in your stance....try moving it back a little and feel like you're hitting down on the ball.

I will vouch for the Adams Idea Pro. Favorite club in the bag. I also have the 585H and Adams Idea Pro Gold but the original Idea Pro is in the bag.
