Pardon my lack of knowledge here, but what exactly do you mean when you say "turn down the ferrule" ? I know what a ferrule is and all, I've just heard this term around before and never knew what people were talking about.

When you put a new (or old) club together the ferrule doesn't match the size of the hosel so you "turn down the ferrule to match the size of the hosel"

turning down ferrules:

tape the hosel with masking tape (2 layers)

use 240 to 300 grit sand paper to sand down the ferrule by holding sand paper and turn the club or keep the club still and shoe shine

make sure you don't work thru the masking tape

then use 000 or 0000 steel wool repeat the step above to remove most of the scratches

then use a tiny peice of paper towel soaked with acetone and use its edge to squeegee the ferrule with up and down motion (along shaft)

(i tried using circular motion, the ferrule looked like crap)

Why do you care what's in my bag or my handicap?

I don't think ferrules can be turned down with acetone;

Think again. For those that are bored (or curious) you can put a small bit of acetone in a tin can and drop a ferrule in. Leave it overnight, and you'll have black soup by morning.

Personally, I use the blue belt on a 42" belt sander to turn down the ferrule, then a ton of pressure and a microfibre cloth using the hand turn down method to shine 'em up.

I would think it would mis-shape the ferrule, especially if there's quite a bit to take off to be flush with the hosel. Different strokes for different folks I guess, but I prefer sanding, then acetone for polish.

You're not wrong - poor technique can leave you with an uneven ferrule, and when there's a lot of material to remove (relatively speaking) you can actually have a 'reverse bell bottom' look if you're not paying attention.

But once you get used to it acetone is faster if you don't have power tools.

I'm no expert, but I agree with LowPost42. It is important to choose the right size ferrule. I use a 42" blue belt (or linen) belt sander to quickly turn down the ferrule (in seconds), then a very quick wipe with acetone and non-lint cloth to get a shine. It takes a little practice. IMO, it is very important not to use a paper towel or typical cotton cloth- more often than not, too much lint gets left on the wet ferrule. If you overdo the acetone wiping, you will not be able to do anything to restore the ferrule, because you will have removed too much ferrule or made it uneven. If you mess up with lint stuck on the ferrule, a quick buff with wax will often improve the appearance. Sometimes with my own clubs, I don't get it perfect, but it doesn't matter. No one notices. No one has ever told me, "dude, c'mon- your ferrule is really Word not allowed- seriously!" biggrin.gif

I agree and disagree about the ferrule being important (to me anyway!) I hate going into a small club somewhere and seeing a set of "new" clubs that the ferrules have been turned down at all! Very poor workmanship I think, I'm not getting on anyones case here but I guess it's just a matter of pride sometimes. Someone ask "who made your clubs" I don't want my name mentioned with Word not allowed looking ferrules!

Have a great day guys, it 48* out and I'm going to get 9 in! :friends:

Agree, I look at the ferrules to see what kind of work the clubmaker does. As a clubmaker, you sign your signature on everything that goes out the door. I will even redo clubs that I taken in on trade to keep my reputation intact.

BTW, a linen belt sander with a acetone touch up will give you the best results.
