Tour Edge Exotics XCGV?

MatrixcMan

Recommended Posts

After having the opportunity to hit the new XCGVs it became obvious that TE listened to golfers and added the foregiveness lacking in the XCG line. Along the way they greatly increased the size of the hybrids and woods. Amazingly, with the increase in size the clubs now sit neutral to open - not what you would expect for a club of this size and foregiveness.

The original Exotics were clearly designed for the better player. Are the XCGVs designed for a player seeking maximum foregiveness similar to the Rapture 2s or the better player as in the original versions?

I'm still waiting to hear from more who have had the opportunity to try this new xcgv driver. No doubt those of us who love the Exotics fairways and hybrids would like to find the same level of performance in their new driver.

Has anyone hit this thing yet?

Also, why do they use a .350 tip shaft. The Voodoo is supposed to be the real thing, not a "made for" version.

I'm waiting for more info on the new FW. Sounds like it's higher launch with the same low spin and more forgiveness than the CB2. The sole and leading edge look better too. I'll wait for some solid reviews.

Agreed on the CB2 fairway...awesome 3 wood. I'm looking for that same magic in a driver.

I haven't hit it, but I have seen it in person. It's a much bigger head than the CB2 or the XCG. It also wants to sit open at address on a carpeted floor in the store. On grass it may not have that tendency, but I'm sure you know what I'm talking about.

I have an XCG 3 wood and my dad has an XCGV 3 wood. Personally I like the my XCG's head a little better (mainly due to the alignment aid) but the Voodoo shaft in his is much better. Both clubs are absolute rockets and have neutral to open faces. I have a 9 handicap and my dad is a 16. In my opinion these woods provide the best combination for hitting off a tee and off the ground.

So do you think the XCGV launches higher even with the Voodoo? I'm guessing you've had a chance to hit his? Any noticeable forgiveness issues? though you probably don't need to much at a 9.

Guy's ......I have been curious about the TT XCGV driver and 3 wood and tested them today both against my Ping V2 driver and 3 wood. The golf course I belong to is closed on Mondays so I had the whole golf course to myself. I hit about 50 drivers each and about 75 3 woods each.

I thought the TT swung real nice (also, I thought the Voodoo shaft was a bit better when you went after the ball vs. the stock Graphite Design), a nice tight shot pattern, but you could have thrown a blanket over the shots I hit with the TT and the Ping drivers. The ball certainly seems to rocket off the face, but the final results are about equal to the Ping. The TT fairway would is about 2-3 yards (at the most) longer (one or 2 steps), and I couldn't see any difference at all between the drivers. The Ping has 16 degrees loft and the TT had 15 degrees loft.

Like I said, the ball certainly seems to rocket off of the face, and I was real excited when I first hit the TT's. But, when I checked the results, the balls really don’t go as far as I thought I saw them go, as coming off the face I thought I absolutely murdered them. The Ping fairways seem to carry further at a higher launch than the TT's, but the TT's seem to roll out longer, so the end result was pretty much about the same.

Personally, paying $350 for a fairway wood is really a bunch of money for a fairway wood, and when you think about how many times you use it, in my mind the extra money is not warranted. I f it were 10, 15 or 20 yards further, I'd pay the extra money. But not for 2 or 3 yards difference.

A couple of other things................this is something that would not affect my purchase, but there are no alignment marks on the top of the clubs. It’s not something I need, just something that's nice to have

Hey man, I'm the dude

I haven't carried a 3 wood regularly for 3 or 4 years due to not being able to find one the fits my game or skill level ( I have been playing hybrids in 3 lofts & switching between them depending on course setup). Have tried all the major OEM's over this time & purchased a few ( 5 to be exact ) but none really ever worked out.

Picked up a 15 degree with voodoo stiff & cannot believe how EASY this thing is to hit & yes they are long, but I would still play this club even with 25 yards less distance, off the tee / fairway ( hard or soft ) even out of the rough I am able to use this club.

Finally my 3 wood spot is filled !

I think that the XCGV actually launches a little lower than my XCG. This may be due to the shaft differences though (Voodoo vs DVS). This observation comes from my Dad hitting both as I find his regular flex shaft hard for me to control.

I would wonder what your typical clubhead speed is and general 3W carry distance. I play and practice in San Francisco, and carry my 3W (TM Burner TP w/Ozik Code-8) about 240. I hit a demo XCG with the UST V2 (not a shaft I generally like) and was carrying it probably 10-15 yards further, and on what appeared to be a flatter decent trajectory (ie more roll-out). I wouldn't say I'm long by most standards, but I can get it out there and my driver clubhead speed is in the 107-110 range. I would attribute the extra distance, in my case, to a reduction in ball spin and a little higher launch angle, producing a flatter, more boring, longer shot.

I think if you have a slower swing speed, you're not likely to benefit from head technologies that are designed for higher swing speeds (ie, launch angles, backspin, etc). You might hit a Ping vs. TEE, and not hit the TEE any longer because the TEE may not produce enough backspin for your ball launch velocity or angle. Sometimes you need to have minimum characteristics in your swing to take advantage of some technology, and perhaps this is one instance for you?
