Which would you try first???
Hey All,

I have a set of Nike Pro Combos which i like very much but i would like to stiffin the shaft a bit more. What would you do Hard step a S300 or Soft step an X100?

The heads are tapperd tip, and my driver SS is 105-110 mph.

Whn you hard step an S300 you will have the Wedge shaft in your 8, 9, and PW, right?? Is this effective?

i to this day still confused on the whole hard and soft stepping so i'm not going to touch that, but you could look at s400 shafts. as they are a tad stiffer than the s300. if you are looking for something in between then you will need to hard or soft step the shaft.

Actually the DGS400 shaft was my shaft of choice for the better part of 3 years. But when my game is on and I am really swinging it good, I feel to much flex in that shaft. It has been debated a bit whether the shaft, "DGS400" is actually stiffer than a DGS300, and after playing it for a while I feel that the difference is insignificant. Each shaft weights 2 grams more, which is 2 grams of steel added thought each shaft wall. I think the last time I frequency them they where 2 cpms stiffer than s300.

I do not have a frequency analyzer anymore and will not be buying one anytime soon. So if anyone has any experience in Hard or Soft steeping I would really like to know which would yield better results. Hard step S300 or Soft Step X100's?

well i'd hard step the dgs300...it will give you better feel as far as where the weight is located on the irons...the x100 even though soft stepped will have a counter balance effect to it...but if you really want to try something nice try to get the tour concept iron shafts (tci) from true temper...

If you have .355 taper shafts you can't hard step the 9 through wedges as their shaft already has the shortest tip section. True Temper makes 9 tapered shaft lenghts. One for each club 1 iron through 9 iron. The wedges use the 9 iron shaft also. So, excluding any butt cut differences, the wedges have the same shaft. Conversly, you can't soft step a 1 iron. Hard stepping will also require a butt extension since moving the 9 into an 8 iron will leave the club about 1/2" short. ;)

I would be buying new shafts, not using the curretn ones and bumping them up. So I guess my best bet would be to buy a set of X100 2-9 irons, and install them in my 3-PW heads , or should I get 1-8 irons shafts and install them in my 3-PW heads?

You will need 2 through 8 for your 3 through 9 iron. 8 iron shafts will also be used in the wedges. You might be able to just keep the S-300 in your gap, sand and/or lob wedges as they are more touch than hard swing. Just a thought.

Do you know by how much the Shafts are softened by doing this (2-8 shafts in 3-PW heads)? Thanks, Gio

This is a very good question!!! ;)

Hard stepping S 300 once will approximately get the same cpm w/ softstepping X100 twice, however they will never feel and play the same and kick point is not the same also ( Soft step X1 will still hit the ball slightly lower ). So you'll have to decide which way to go to get you a ball flight and feel you like.

There are 3 ways of Hard stepping S300 properly:

1. you can tipped the 37" wedge shaft for 9 and PW by 1/2 inch and adjust the hosel size minimally to fit ( most iron you don't need to ).

2. ( My way ;) ) try to find a 36.5" raw shaft for this hardstepping purpose or I can maybe order some for you. Yes, This shaft is not well know and introduce for public.

3. Use a S400 37" wedge shaft. ( the last thing i would do, cuz it doesn't make to much different IMO. )
