Course suggestions

I will be in Charlotte, Greensboro and than in the Raleigh area for work. I will have a few afternoons free to play and neeed some suggestions. i will be playing Pinehurst #2 on the morning of the 3rd and would like a course for the afternoon in that area. Any suggetstions would be great.

Play Tobacco Road. Period.

 

Near Greensboro, visit Tot Hill Farm. Bryan Park is a good one as well.

My personal opinion is, any course you play in the afternoon on the same day you play No. 2 is going to be a waste. Your still going to be on a high from No. 2 thinking about it and what a great experience it was, you'll be halfway through the round before you know what you're doing.

 

Personal disclaimer out of the way: if you're set on playing another course, then I echo the Tobacco Road suggestion. It is right on the way back to Raleigh about 30 minutes north of Pinehurst. Or if you wanted to keep up the top level coursres, go about 2 miles down the road and play either Mid Pines or Pine Needles. Probably in the top 5 courses in Pinehurst other than No. 2.

Pinehurst #8 is also really nice, and you wouldn't have to drive very far after you finish your round on #2.

On the road between Greensboro and Raleigh, is Mebane. Mill Creek is there...nice course, reasonable price.

 

The Challenge is also high regarded.

 

Tobacco Road is worth it, no question, but it's a ways from the second leg of your trip.

MidPines!!! Classic old course with a great staff. Provides plenty of challenge if you are off your game.

Bryan Park has 2 courses, both are nice. If you play there I'd choose the Champions course, it's a much better layout than the Players. The Champions course will host the 2010 US Publinx.

Tobacco Road is great but you will be tired from all the walking up and down to the tees and greens. The Carolina is a nice course, greens are tough. #8 and #4 are nice. While in Raleigh the Neuse is nice and good priced, also River Ridge. Tobacco Road is a must, you either love it or hate it. #2 is nothing special layout wise but you will be amazed at Tobacco Road. #2 is all about history. The Neuse is in Clayton just outside of Raleigh.

 

I second the Heritage in Wake Forest. Nice elavation changes like the Neuse.

Not at all, So many different and great layouts around there and for great prices. Tobacco Road is a must, no other golf like it on the east coast.....maybe Tot Hill, but it is similar to Tobacco since it was done by the same designer. Try The Pit, just south of Pinehurts, great fun layout. I would try to play as many in the Pinehurst/Southern Pines area, but if you have to play in Raleigh try Devil's Ridge just south of town, or the Heritage just north in Wake Forest.

I have to wonder about playing Tobacco Road in the morning and then No 2. Are you sure you have enough daylight to do that? Got to drive from the Road to 2 and it will take a while. I would play No 4 as you are right there. That way you can get it around. Be sure to take a caddy on No2. Cart is a pain in the rear. Walk almost as much.

When in Greensboro play Bryan Park Champions course or go to Mebane and play Mill Creek. Grandover in Gboro is OK too.

Never played it but it looks nice. Tobacco and Tot Hill are a must. I drive 5+hrs just to play them when I can.

Not to argue with a previous poster as every course has it supporters, but under no circumstances would I play The Carolina in SPines/Pinehurst. The locals pan it with good reason. One trip down there we played Little River one day (before their redo) and The Carolina another. Absolutely miserable experiences, both of them. Apparently Little River fixed some things, but I hated it so much I won't go there to find out.

I'd rank it the 3rd best course in Pinehurst...behind 2 & 4.....and the best value!!

Thanks for all the great suggestions. I will not be playing #2 and tobacco on the same day. For some reason I thought that Tobacco was in Pinehurst, but mapquest says about an hour away. Probably gonna play #8,4 or the pit.....It's so hard to make a decision. all of these courses look so great!!!

Tobacco and Pinehurst are really only about 30 minutes apart, baiscally right up Route 1. I just google-directioned it and it say 31 minutes, so really only about 25 minutes. It is only a little over an hour from Pinehurst to Raleigh. Very easy to do in the same day and worth every minute!

That's correct Tobacco road is only about 25 minutes away. Tobacco Road will be 10 times better than The Pit. #8 is also great, thought #4 was good but not great. Played it before the winter rye really came out, so that might be one reason I didn't like it as much.

Pinehurst #8 is the best course after #2 at the Pinehurst Resort. Skip the Pit and play #8.

Mid Pines is great, Mid South is unbelievable, and if you want a stiff test, The National Golf Club, that course kills me!

12 Oaks is private...for now. They have no official plans to go public that anyone knows, but they are sitting on a new Nicklaus course operated by Club Corp, stuck in the housing downturn.

 

Something is going to have to give.

You really can't skip #4 at Pinehurst is you've never played it, especially if you like SAND! Truly a great 4.5 hours. And BTW, Tot Hill Farms requires pin point accuracy with the driver..Tough course..but worth the drive IMO.

I'm curious as to whether anyone's played & has an opinion on Oak Hollow in High Point.

 

I'm looking for a course in the Triad area to play on the way to Pinehurst. Played Bryan Park and Tanglewood the last two years, really liked both. Other suggestions would be appreciated!

I've played it and it was ok. Given the choice though, I'd rather play either of the champions courses at Tanglewood or BP.

Boy looks like the weather gods threw you a nasty one. I hope some of the week become salvagable for you.
