Legends And Cedar River At Shanty Creek

Hey,

Looking at going out to play at Shanty Creek for the May long weekend as there are such great deals going on at the time.

 

How are the courses doing now? How are they in comparisson to say treetops?

 

We are planning on hitting up Arcadia Bluffs (played there love it), and do Cedar River and the Legends essentially.

 

Is Schuss Mountain pretty decent? Is it worth playing over Cedar or Legends or should we just play one of those over again?

I didn't play there last year, but I had been there each of the four years before that. Cedar River an the Legend are quite nice, and I think they stand up pretty well compared to the Treetops courses. The conditioning of the Legend was a bit suspect the first couple of years that we played there (didn't play Cedar River until the 3rd year, due to the extra $$ -- and it has been great each time), but it seemed to improve over the next two years. I'm actually going there again this year the weekend before Memorial Day weekend with a large group.

Schuss is ok, but I'm not a huge fan of it because it takes the driver out of my hands. There's a lot of tree-lined holes that dogleg at about 200-225 yards. It's a decent strategic test, but it's not in the same league as either of the two higher-end courses at the resort. Actually, if you'd rather play a different course for your third round, Hawk's Eye is basically next door to Shanty Creek, and I would rank it ahead of any of the Shanty Creek courses, so that's something you might want to consider.

Don't waste your time on Hawks Eye. POS/IMO. Talk about taking the driver out of your hand, blind tee shots everywhere. If you are not on a stay n play at Shanty, consider a short drive to the Alpine course at Boyne Mountain. Awesome classic design that's a blast to play. If you play the Alpine, locate Deer Lake on your drive in and remember "every putt breaks towards the lake" forget what you read. Or just plat Cedar River twice!

Are you sure you're not thinking of the Chief, which is part of the same resort? It's been a couple of years since I last played Hawk's Eye, but I remember it as a pretty straightforward Northern Michigan style layout. The Chief was irons off the tee half the time.

I'll second tiger Jr. I found Hawks Eye much more enjoyable than The Chief, which is probably the most disappointing course I've ever played. Also I'd avoid Schuss and Shanty and replay Cedar if you are doing a stay and play if not doing atay and play I'd look into Black Forest.
