Need ball recommendation for a high handicapper with new irons

Hey Guys,

Just picked up a set of TM r7's. This is my first set of good irons... I have played for awhile but always just used some crappy off brands and played whatever balls I found in the woods or the cheap mix batches from the flea market..

I hit it pretty straight, not sure of swing speed but i am 25 6 foot and 240...

Not too worried about spin issues.. looking in the cheaper bracket of 20-25 bucks a dozen..

what do you think??

In that price range, the best all around ball, IMHO, is the Srixon AD333. Start there. The Srixon Trispeed is also excellent.

head to the nearest Dick's. you should be able to find the Maxfli Fire and Tour Fire on clearance for $10/doz and $15/doz respectively. the Srixon Z-URS is also on clearance at GG for $25/doz, 2 doz for $40, if u want more greenside spin. but if you're not worried about greenside spin, you can't beat the Maxfli Fire at $10/doz--it's basically a 3-piece Noodle.

Thats the cheap bracket? thats almost $2 a ball. I am sure you can get decent balls in the $1 or less bracket for a high handicapper.

Pinnacle gold. They are the hardest balls, most distance and cheap

They're great balls. They don't spin as much as a tour ball, but they feel great, putt great and have good distance. However, if you're only going for distance then by all means go for Pinnacle, Top Flite Freaks or whatever.

I guess I should clarify that I am not worried about bad spin.. As in off center hits and stuff... I would like a good balance between spin and distance in that price range... Just picked a sleeve of taylormade burners so we will see how that works... Goint to try and play a short course this afternoon

I like the Srixon Soft feel or the Titleist DT Roll

Wilson Zip is a nice all around performing ball at a great price. Soft around the greens. $15-20/dozen. You can find them closer to $15 online.

 

Topflight Feel also good one.

I'm new to the game (just over a year) and also a high handicapper (23-25). You can't beat the d2 feel for a buck a ball or the wilson zip at 1.50 a ball.

I'm sorry, I mean the Wilson Staff 50 not the Zip.

Srixon AD33 and Wilson Zip would be my choice. Both have great feel and will let you experience a little bit of what the premiere balls offer so you can find out what you like/need down the road.

Srixon ADs, Nike Power Softs, or TopFlite D2 Feels. One of these should be just what you are looking for. Buy a sleeve of each and use your next round as a ball test. Finding the right golf ball for your game is hard work, but it is worth it. Your scorecard will thank you!

I'm gonna echo the D2 Feel recommendation. Head to your nearest Walmart or Target and you're good 2 go!

If you want some decent balls at a great price, go to lostgolfballs.com. There you can get a few dozen of any of the mid-line balls, Srixon Trispeed, Callaway hx-hot, bridgestone e5 or e6 etc for like $10 - $15 a dozen. That way you don't stress when you loose them (cool)

I wouldnt put too much into balls just starting out. play what you find, and treat yourself to sleeve or 2 every now and again. hell, my dad has been playing for his entire life and still goes down to the club every year in the late summer and picks balls from the OB's -- I see him teeing off with a few of mine sometimes.

I'm a believer in that the ball you play should be the ball that pleases your short game the best. If I can't stand to putt with a ball, no matter if it's a nickel or 4 bucks per ball, I won't use it. But if it putts like butter and takes a wedge well, I'll game it. Nothing worse than using rocks that just wander aimlessly around the putting surface.

I agree, you need a ball that will play well with the short game or when you get into the scoring range. Some people are so focused on getting a ball that will go a long way from the Tee but throw away strokes around the green cause the ball is going all over the place (sometimes it's the person holding the club and not the ball that is the problem). Remember that a 250+ yard drive and a 10 yard chip shot that rolls off the green again still count the same on the score card.

 

I would suggest you consider the Burner TP, or Srixon AD333 or Bridgestone's new e7+. Good luck finding the golf ball best suited for your game.
