Walk if you can...

Both courses are fairly flat. On the South, the toughest climb is from the 5th green up to the 6th tee and maybe the last 60 yards of No. 13. On the North the toughest may be up the 7th fairway and maybe climbing up to the back teebox on the same hole (great view, by the way).

Make the most of it!

are you paying the non resident fee? :russian_roulette:

no choice there. I live in Salt Lake City. I'm meeting my wife and daughter in SD but I get in around 11:00 AM and they don't arrive until 7:00 PM so I figured 'what the hell, why not?'

They have a shotgun start tourney that should be wrapping up around 12:30 and according to the guy I spoke to I "should have a great chance of getting out that day"

I almost always walk when I play and I think it will be a better way to see the course and take in the whole experience.

You will need somewhere to sit or lie down while you repeatedly wait for the groups ahead during your 6 hour round, so ride or bring a fold out camp bed.

I did a search last night and read some of your posts. Not a big fan I understand.

Someone told me yesterday "you don't have to be the best. Everyone just has to THINK you are". Obviously Torrey has that going for it.

I'll just lie down and if anyone asks I'll say I've blown out my left knee and need surgery but wanted to wait until after Torrey Pines to have it done.

I went to TP looking forward to a great course and a great day. I thought the course was a bit boring (nice scenery, though), condition was only average, and the pace of play was horrible. Played the last 3 holes in the dark. Been in SD a number of times since and never went back. Played Maderas instead. Lovely.

No to discourage the OP, but I'd have to agree here. I still have not gotten over the fact that I paid $300 while the other guys I was playing with paid $60.

Anyhow, at least I played TP south once. Will I ever pay to play there again? NO. Had a chance to play pelican a few weekends ago and that course was much more enjoyable and came with a fore caddie.

That said, i hope you enjoy.

I hear what you're saying. My daughter caddies at Bandon Dunes and I've played all 3 courses but I wouldn't go back and pay full boat again.

I want to play TP for the experience. I'm not rich but the money doesn't really bother me to play it once.

As a san diego resident, I'm quite happy to hear that. Since we have all of four municipal courses for a metropolis with the population of a small state, we're quite happy to have it left alone. No offense.

think again buddy. its because of us out of staters that you locals get to have such a nicely maintained course. You think they could do all this with you guys paying $60 green fees? I think NOT.

I played TP South this morning. IT wasn't too bad to walk. You can take the carts in the fairway if you ride, they will not let you drive in the rough though. The course was in pretty food shape. The rough wasn't very high so it wasn't as hard as I had heard. I talked to a local before my round and he said he had never seen the rough so short. It was great to play it once, but I would have to agree with some of the other posters, I am not sure I would pay that much to play it again. I am playing Pelican Hill on Thursday and Aviara on Friday, I have heard these are much better.

I think people have too high an expectation for Torrey. Its a public muni track that is best known for its golf history rather than its playing conditions or pace of play. That being said its in pretty good shape the last time I played it and the pace of play really isnt that bad most of the time. You have to remember its a 7000+ yard course with rough that envelopes your golf ball so rounds will take 5 hours. Aviara and Pelican will be less crowded and in better shape but they have little or no history. So it really comes down to what you're looking for.

+1. It's a muni. A nice and famous muni, but still a golf course owned by the city for the enjoyment of the community. It's nice once a year for the buick, and the rest of the time people expect it to be some hoity-toity country club setup.

Agreed played Canyon/Meadow last week.. Meadow is garbage. Coronado will be a 5 hour slow and dragging round, but an easy walk! Aviara might be in better condition, but isnt near test of Torrey!

If you want a great track for 1/2 the cost of TP, hit up Steele Canyon. Its a sweet Gary Player design (27 holes). If you do play, go Canyon and Ranch.

You will still pay less than 100 M-Thurs and I feel its a better course than Torrey.

Well I did it.

My plane landed at 11:30 and I was standing on the first tee of Torrey South at 1:20.

I didn't care about the price ($220 with cart I think) . I didn't care about the pace (a little over 5 hours).

I wouldn't have the time, money, or patience to do it all the time but I will play it again some day.

Spectacular.

If you truly want the experience walk the course and play the back plates. Reward yourself with the drugstore burger at the lodge bar at the end of the round. The fries are not so good but the burger is muy bueno.

Nice. Grew up in SD (in Pacific Beach) went to LJ High and never gave TP a thought until long after I moved away. Took up the game of golf last year, which happened to be the same year the US Open went to TP for the first time.

Played TP for the first time by showing up at 4:30 AM with my sunday bag full of clubs. Got out with the first group on Sunday morning just before sunrise. A very memorable round of golf indeed!
