Mizuno MP-14 and MP-29

Just some thoughts from those who have hit both

I currently play the MX-20 irons, and like them, but I want to move to a player type iron to better myself. I saw these two older model Mizuno irons(MP-14 and MP29), which still get good reviews..I can get these real cheap on Ebay..SO..for those who have played either or both of these irons, which one is more forgiving and do you prefer?

I prefer the 14s. I played a set to death over about six years and absolutely loved them. To me, they're a more pleasing shape - shorter heel to toe, more compact and squarer overall - and produced a better flight for me. The 29s, being stronger-lofted, produced a lower but spinnier flight as I remember. Feel-wise, there's little between them and they're both in the same bracket, forgiveness-wise. I actually think the 14s are relatively forgiving for a blade - particularly on slightly toed mishits which tend to be my miss when I do miscue one. The 29s have obviously got a bit more face to play with if you do drop a clanger, but aren't particularly more lenient for mishits.

 

Both are excellent sets, but for my game and eye the 14s were the better club.

14's are more forgiving, especially with their turf interaction. You need to hit a cleaner ball to get the 29's to work for you. Both excellent musclebacks.

 

 

When I saw your post I went back 12 years, such a simpler time when clubs stayed in a catalog for many years.

I play the MP-14s. I have never hit the 29s. But for the technical differences, go to the Mizuno golf site. Click site map at the bottom. Go to the "retired irons" section. You can see the specs of each club.

The 29s have less offset and stronger lofts. The 14s have no bounce in the longer irons and little bounce until the 8 and 9. I think the 29s are longer from heel to toe also.

The first complete set of irons I played with was a set of Staffs like in your avatar. I still have them minus the 3 and 5 heads. (flew off on par 3s into ponds). Talk about sweet. I got those when I was about 8. We bought them out of a pawn shop for 10 bucks in 1973 or 1974. I played with them till 1985. I had a local clubmaker make a set of clubs with "classic blade" on the heads. (Golfsmith or Dynacraft maybe) Got the MP-14s in 1999.

They were made right in front of me on a tour van between Nationwide stops.

 

I had a lot of good times while playing those Staffs. High School, College, some of the best times of my life! Time goes by so fast. But that's how memories are made. I am in full daydreaming mode now thinking about the past! Thanks for the jumpstart.

the 29's were more popular on the european tour because they dig a bit more than the 14.

Had both sets - great clubs. Preferred the 14's though. I bought the 29's thinking I'd be one club longer with the stronger lofts but my flight and distance were the same so I got rid of them. The MP-14 is currently cheaper at $130 vice MP-29 at $250.

i played a set of 14's in high school and then picked up a mint set of 29's off my college teammate played those all of 2005 i would get the 14's and play a 56 60 set up as I think the pw is like 49 or 50 and I think the 29's had the same lofts as my 962's 2 degrees stronger

Never hit the 29's because I heard they were more demanding for my skill level. Thinking about the 52's and 62's, but kicking the can of just finding another set of 14's. They have been good to me.

I have owned a set of each, and preferred the MP14. They look better and for some reason, I felt they are softer.

i have had probably six sets of 29's since i was in junior golf. the 29's are great heads and have a good shape to them.

however, i was always wondering what the bounce angle was on each club? anyone know?
