Wrist Cock Release

Probably the best one I've seen requires taking a piece of surgical tubing and tying one end around your left leg just above the knee, (reverse for lefties ;P) and just hold the other end in your left hand. The idea is to keep tension on the tubing as long as you can throughout the swing, thus delaying the release of your wristcock.

I'm struggling with this a bit right now myself.

The first swing thought that I want is the feeling that once I get the club to the top of my backswing, I want teh feeling that I leave my arms behind, and I'm using my hips and shoulders to throw the club while my arms and wrist are basically "dead"

The second is a drill where I tie off a piece of surgical tubing one end to my club and the other to a door knob and start my downswing from about hip high and maintain my wrist lag and then try and replicate that feeling my full swing.

Hope that helps.

The best thing that helped me was when I realized my wrist hinge was a function of the bending of the right elbow. I do not hinge my wrists unless the right elbow is folding...some exceptions come to mind, but nevermind that right now.

Now, if the hinge is a function of the right elbow, then the longer you can keep your right elbow bent in the downswing, the longer the wrists can stay hinged.

The nice part about this is you don't have to use the hand muscles to keep the hinge intact...I used to try and try to force that hinge to stay cocked with the hands and wrists, very problematic.

I accomplished two things when I started working on this little 'discovery'...more clubhead speed and a better swingpath through impact.

How about the pump drill? Swing back to 9 o'clock, full wrist ****. Maintain your wrist **** and turn through to waist high holding the angle, pump this move twice and on the third strike the ball. As seen on the golf channel.

I believe if you can maintain as little tension in your hands and forearms as possible, holding the angle becomes a function of physics and centrifugal(sp) forces. Like a weight on a string, the weight will always lag behind unless you stiffen the string i.e. squeeze the life out of the grip in an effort to hit and control the ball. Loosen up and trust your target.

I watched Johnny Miller on the Golf Channel talking about how his clubhead speed was still increasing after impact during his prime when he was maybe the best iron player alive, I started thinking how I could possibly work on achieving a delayed release because I've struggled with an early release for most of the 10 years I've been playing. At the range one day last year I hit two buckets of balls with mid irons at 50-75% effort with my only swingthought being keep my right hand and right side (I'm right handed) completely passive until my left hand reaches my left thigh - then release as fast and smooth as I could. This has completely changed the quality of my iron strikes = my divots are now more often taken after ball contact, I pull/come over the top far less frequently, it feels easier to get to my left side and avoid the reverse pivot that an early release sometimes caused with my swing, and I'm hitting the ball harder and longer. I've spent alot of time grooving that feeling by using 50% speed swings with wiffle golf balls into the side of my garage. I posted this thought in an earlier thread on this site and one of the members noted that he found it hard to believe that someone could use this thought on full 100% swings because it happens so fast, in retrospect he's probably right but I'm convinced that my time spent grooving this feeling with 1/2-3/4 speed practice swings is the reason I'm hitting my irons much better.
