New irons or new slighter?

Recommended Posts

Well I know next year is a long ways off, but I want your guys' opinion on what I should be saving my money for. A new set of irons, or a custom Slighter Tacoma.

Irons-I'm hitting the irons I have right now fine, they are hitting the ball a little high though, but I'm not sure whether that is from the regular flex shaft or the game-improvement style clubhead. I could probably go another year or so with these babies though if I had too.

Putter-I like the putter I have right now, and I'm definitely not putting bad at all, but I know that if I bought the irons next year and waited another year on the slighter, I wouldnt be surprised if he was with some major OEM by then. And that would really piss me off if I wasnt able to get ahold of a custom made slighter. I suppose it's not really a performance issue, more of a "Boy it would be nice to have one of those before he stops making them," kind of thing.

I suppose I could also just be trying to start some more activity in this forum (cool)

Here is my advice to anyone contemplating new clubs. Dont fix what isn't broken buy buying something you dont need. Don't buy what your never gonna use. You have a plenty good putter, and if you are putting well with it you have to ask yourself, why change? There is no real necessity in changing something that works. So I would say if the irons are not working out for you go with the irons. Slighter may or may not be working with another oem but theres gonna be another guy out there just like him, sorry to those who own slighters he does great work but hes nothing all that rare when it comes to guys who can mill well. For example, Heritage Golf, he's another upstart headed in the same direction as slighter. Consider what you need not what you think it'd be cool to have, then buy that.

Stop being a club ho!

Anyway, either switch is hard to get use to. Changing a putter and putting good is hard to do sometimes. Iron wise, I think it's worse to get the distances and feel down. But, because of your situation, I'd say drop the irons. If you aren't happy with what they are doing, why stick with em?

They have good points but if you really want that custom putter, go with that. Irons will always be around more than a custom putter...i mean you could buy two years model ago if you still wanted. I say go with the putter because you can always later get irons. But if yuor iron game gets to bad then switch irons. good luck with it.

it all depends. Do you change putters very offten? I have about 7 putters i love and i never use a putter for more than like a week then i give it a day off and use another then go back it i did not putt well with the other putter. Putters are something i have to change to keep me fresh and my mind concentrated. If you are like me buy the putter, but if not buy the irons. I can't see myself leaving my irons. I dont change my irons or wedges ever! thats how i am. ALso you could get the irons, then sell your irons and save some money to buy a slighter, then you will have the best of both worlds.

Keep in mind when you ask others opinions of what you should buy that:

1) You have to pay for it

2) You have to look at it in your bag

If you're looking down the road I would focus on "saving for something golf related", and not "saving for a Slighter" (or another specific custom putter) or "saving for a new set of irons". A year is a very long time, and a lot can change in that year.

While Slighter makes a fine putter, the Red X in your bag is a fine putter as well. The TA-7 is a good set of irons, and your problem could come from the R-300 shafts (which can be easily remedied).

If your still interested after all this ho' jargon.

1) Look at what your weaker in

2) assess your game, do you need more GIR or need less putts (Remember NEED, not I'm hitting 15 of 18, ummm, I know! New set time)

3) When is your season? If you order a slighter then expect 10 weeks of waiting plus time to adjust.

4) some tour players DO play "Game improvement irons", and hey, there on tour.

My opinion is to go for the irons. Since they will help your game more than a new putter will, it just makes sense. Maybe your taste will change and you will regret buying a custom putter when you had the money for irons. Putters make great gifts so inform your rents about this "problem"!! It's always a good thing for your parents to see you saving up for something that you really want. From my experiences, they are more likely to help you out with it financially. But in the end it is your hard earned money and you should honestly spend it however you like.

I gotta take issue with this statement. Even a medicore golfer can get the ball around within 50 yard (wedge range) of the green. Taking that into consideration and provided you lay up on every par 5, you're hitting a max of 20-22 iron shots a round.

Ask yourself how many putts per round you're making? Unless your name is Stan Utley or Brad Faxon, you're probably somehwhere in the 28-35 range.

With a slighter you've got the unique opportunity to get a completely customized club, the club you hit the most shots a round with. Why not take advantage of that and get one exactly the way you want it. Then there's no excuses, it's not Scotty's interpretation of what your putter should look like, it's 100% yours.

There's a reason why your putter and wedges are called you scoring clubs :golfer:

To further Taylormadefan's point I will use myself as an example.

Today I hit 15/18 GIR, shot a 75, and had 36 putts. doing quick math 48% of my shots were on the putting surface.

Customer putter >>>>>>>>>>>> New Irons like TMF said anyone should be able to get close to the green no matter what irons they play...its what you do on and around the green that counts!!

and how sweet do green and black look together?!?! i mean that putter is gorgeous!!!!!!
