Nashville

Private or upscale public

I'm considering a second residence in Nashville. If I pull the trigger, a home course is required. Criteria as follows;

• Open year around
• An excellent practice area that allows practice from "turf" all year. No mats
• If private, a golf first oriented club.
• Walking is ok, or better yet, encouraged.
• Preferrably within a 30 minute drive from downtown. A little further is ok for an exceptional property.
• Diversity of membership options.

Its in Franklin, south of Nashville on I65. Both courses are now private and the LPGA plays or used to have a tourney there.

When I was looking to move to Nashville (didn't end up doing it), Hermitage was at the top of my list... A single membership includes green fees at their two courses and unlimited practice facility access and costs $1800 w/o cart fees for walkers or $2800 to include cart fees and discounts for guests.

Thanks for the input so far. I e-mailed the membership director at Legends of Vanderbilt. Recieved an immediate response. Membership options and prices are within the budget. Anybody with insight as to the other criteria at Legends?

Will checkout Hermitage.

Don't know if this will help you or not. I have played both Hermitage courses last September and both were in great condition. Didn't spend a lot of time on the practice range though.

I've only played the General course at Hermitage and thought it was an OK layout. They have GPS on the carts and the practice range was good. They have a different area for the members to practice. The course was flat, so not too hard to walk. I think the drive from the clubhouse to the President course is long.

Private

I don't know how much your budget is, but I love the Golf Club of Tennesse (private). It is about 25 minutes from downtown. Tom Fazio course and all golf. I moved away from Nashville about 10 years ago after played golf for Vandy. Beautiful course. It was my favorite course in the area. In school, we got to play Opryland, Richland (Nicklaus), Belle Meade (donald ross), Golf Club (Fazio), and Legends. All nice places. Nashville has lots of good courses.

Upscale Public

Legends Club in Franklin (south of downtown) is very nice (Bob Cupp/Tom Kite designed). It is now the home to the Vandy golf team with new practice facilities. I believe they still flip the 2 courses each year from private to public. Nice practice facility.

Hermitage-nice courses. It used to host the LPGA before they moved to Legends.

Hope this helps. Nashville is a great place and I am sure you will enjoy it. Most courses are open in the area if weather is ok.

The Golf Club of Tennesse would be the hands down choice if they were open all year. Unfortunately for me the close the course to play middle of December until middle of March and I'm looking to escape the Northern michigan winters a little bit.

Oh, you are right. I forgot about that part. I got excited about recommending it. The club was founded by a member of Augusta National so the clubhouse looks like Augusta and they close down the course similar to AN.

I do not know what shape or if it is still open, but Nashville Golf an Athletic was a great course at one time. They build it to host a PGA or US Open back in the 70s. I believe it is a Devlin/von hagge design. I has been over 10 years since I played it but it was a good track.

Another place to check out is The Governors Club (Arnold Palmer design) which is in Brentwood near Vandy Legends Club. I have heard it is good but it opened after I left Nashville.

There are a quite a few not mentioned but the newest private course is Westhaven golf club in Franklin. Also if you are looking for what people say is the best private course close to Nashville check out The golf club of Tn. in Kingston Springs.
