Sandhills, NC Golf Trip - April 2010

I've been to Pinehurst twice. I got lucky and played Tobacco Road the first time I went and I wouldn't go to the area with out playing the course. Obviously if you haven't played you wouldn't regret missing it. Once again, there is no way I leave Tbacco Road out of the rotation. Don't miss out.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Going to push to play Pine Needles and leave Pinewild for a future year.

I'm thinking a return trip to Hyland might be in order for a re-round as well.

April can't get here fast enough!

The choice between PN and PW may come down to cost - we always like to play one top end course but there are limits. Probably going to be PN though.

Any other suggestions or replacements? Especially places we haven't played - have played: Mid Pines, Hyland, Longleaf, Talamore, The Pit, The Carolina, Little River, Tobacco Road, Southern Pines, Foxfire (both courses), Legacy, National, Pinehurst #1, Anderson Creek and Whispering Pines CC.

I'd like to try Tot Hill Farm but not sure if it works with our schedule - it doesn't sound like the place for your first swing in four plus months...

In the area, I have played Pine Needles (3 times), Mid-Pines, Pinehurst 1&2, and Tobacco Road.

While Pinehurst No. 2 was great, Pine Needles is also great and much cheaper. PN is one of my favorite courses. Don't miss it.

Tobacco Road - a crazy Mike Stranz design. I enjoyed it, but I was playing very well. Not a course for a beginner.

Pinehurst No. 1: It was a fun design and is harder than one would expect from the lenght. Nevertheless, the price (even at twilight rates) is to high for the quality of the course. While I liked it (I love Ross courses), it was overpriced.

Heh, I think I've been confusing people with the way I listed courses - those are courses I [b]have[/b] played in the area.

I agree 100% with your take on Tobacco Road and Pinehurst #1 though. I liked TR but I was having a good ball striking day. I don't think my dad enjoyed it as much. #1 was definitely wildly overpriced (we weren't staying at the resort).

I'd be interested to hear any comments on some of the courses we haven't played - ones I can think of off the top of my head: Beacon Ridge, Seven Lakes CC, Bayonet, Carolina Trace CC, Deercroft, Quail Ridge, Keith Hills CC ... um ... wow, the list is getting short for rerounds and next year's trip!

Played MidPines today and I must say that it is in the best shape I have ever seen it. Very fun Ross course. Pretty much as designed they claim. Managed/co-owned by PineNeedles so you are getting a class act at MPines, too. Might not be the longest course but worth playing IMO.

Skip all those except Bayonet at Puppy Creek. Look into The Pit, Tot Hill Farm, Little River, and Legacy or perhaps The Carolina. Feel free to PM me anytime if you want insights on area courses. Lived in this area my whole life. Tons of great golf, some better than others of course.

Yep, both of those course are awesome. The wife is taking lessons over at Pine Needles. Great course and facility.

I'm not too surprised that all those courses are skip-worthy - okay, I've read some positive stuff about Seven Lakes but nothing much about any of the rest. Which is part of why we haven't played them. Bayonet isn't real high on our list just because it's a hike.

We've played The Pit, Little River, Legacy and the Carolina already. All nice courses (okay, we unanimously hated The Pit, but that was probably just a bad day). After reading all the favorable comments on Tot Hill I'll put that on the list as a possibility for this trip - probably either coming in or on getaway day, since Asheboro is a bit of a hike too.

I enjoy Seven Lakes. Played it last summer and was in tremendous condition. Some good holes, and none are terrible. I would certainly go back anytime. Now, don't get me started again on The Carolina LOL.
