May sound completely ridiculous, but just curious

I was wondering if anybody ever thought of using one of the Nike Lucky 13 or Sweet 16 drivers instead of their 3 wood. I was thinking because I can hit my driver off the deck quite well and think that if you could hit it right it would be good off the ground and really good off the tee. Has anybody tried this? Considering I usually hit a 3 wood a maximum of 2 or 3 times a round off the ground, and not very well off the tee, it would make sense. Any thoughts?

sounds like a bad move. although you may be able to hit driver off the deck sometimes decently, you arent always gonna have a perfect lie when you are in the situation to hit a 3w. plus there are so many different fairway wood options i would just try a deep faced one if i were you and see where it goes from there.

I know this probably isn't quite what you are looking for, but I used to hit my 8.5 degree ping isi driver off the fairway sometimes. It was never a good idea, but I got lucky a few times.

 

With the drivers you seem to have to flaten your swing plane if you want to hit them off the ground. I don't know why, it just seemed that way to me.

 

It is kind of fun, and if you do pull it off your friends do think it is a novel idea.

Don't you think the club face of those lucky/sweet drivers is a little bit too deep? For me it is very hard to hit even near CG if from the fwy. I've tried cobra sz 400 tour and adams 460, both are no luck. My successful rate of using driver on the fwy is a little less than that of a 15 feet one putt.

I do know some pga pro doing in that way and got some success (near 300 yards, go straight), but I am not a pro which is the fact I knew ;)

 

In fact my crazy idea is to use a fwy/driver as a belly/long putter. The length is just right and we know they are manufactured in the highest quality :crazy: If works I can have a 13 fwy and 4 wedges :)

I say go for it. You never know what will work for you. it will probably be much easier to keep in the fairway off the tee on tight holes and you can hit your 19 degree launcher out of the fairway or tough lies. you might want to trade your 15 and 19 in for something around 17 if you need a little more distance out of a not so perfect lie on par 5's. good luck. let us know how it works out.

I've thought about it. It looks like in your sig you got 13 clubs right now. I would think it would be a great idea to add a 13 or 16 driver in there for off the tee but not off the deck. A 13* driver should be much easier off the tee than a 13* 3wood and same with the 16*. Off the deck though drivers are just generally a bad idea, partly because of you will have suboptimal launch conditions even on the best hits.

 

You could employ a less aggressive mickleson strategy with a "distance" driver and then a "control" driver being your 13 or 16

all of the reasons stated above...PLUS the most obvious...how about where the sweetspot is?!? they have moved higher and higher up the clubface for 5 years now...if you want to hit knuckleballs about 3 feet off of the ground...go for it

I uesd to hit driver off the deck a lot. The last driver that I could do that with consistency was the TM 320 tour. After that the drivers are just way to big and the sweetspot too high up on the face.

with courses getting longer and longer you're going to see even hackers playing two drivers, first a 460cc 8-9* driver with a 45-55 gram shaft that you hit purely for distance and then a 250-400 cc, 11-13* driver with a 65-75 gram shaft that you use as a control driver. What you now play as a 3 wood will be replaced with a 14-20* hybrid type club, another hybrid takes the place of the 3-4 iron and the irons start at 5. You figure either the ball gets longer so you really only need 5 wood or less on a second shot into a par 5, or most par 5's are going to be 575-600 yards so you really aren't going to be able to reach them anyway.

 

I remember seeing an infomercial for an Izzo Z-wood(Its endorsed by Dottie Pepper you know :) ) its something like 275 cc's and 12* of loft, they were selling it as driver replacement, but I thought it'd be more effective as a 3 wood for those who don't hit it off the deck much

i have hit a 905 s off the deck like 310 (eagle on a 600 yard par 5 with it it was easy to hit (the sharper leading edge seemed to help
